MANILA, Philippines – After dominating De La Salle University in the men’s volleyball competition in the UAAP Season 85, The National University maintained its spotless record.

The reigning champions swept the opening round of the event on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena by defeating the Green Spikers by scores of 25-21, 25-21, and 25-16.

La Salle dropped to 4-3 for fourth place, while NU will advance to the second round with a 7-0 record.

With 19 significant points on 14 attempts, three blocks, and three aces, Michaelo Buddin led the Bulldogs. With 16 goals, Ken Malinis also had a strong day.

After winning the first two games, NU gradually pulled away from La Salle in the third set as Buddin slammed three attacks and forced an error from their opponent to overcome a 10-11 disadvantage to win 14-11.

With a dump ball, Obed Mukaba increased the lead to 18-13 and never looked back. With a comfortable lead of 24-15, NU used a 5-0 run that was completed by an ace from Nico Almedras to take the lead.

JM Ronquillo briefly prevented NU from winning, but La Salle ultimately made a mistake that allowed the Bulldogs to sweep the first seven games.

With 17 points, Ronquillo carried La Salle throughout the entire game by himself, with Vince Maglinao coming in second with only seven.
