Nxled may no longer be the team holding the Premier Volleyball League championship trophy, but Jonah Sabete believes the Chameleons have gained something equally important from their latest campaign: a clearer picture of who they are and what they can become.

The disappointment of surrendering the crown is undeniable. After reaching the summit, Nxled entered the season with the difficult task of proving that its championship breakthrough was not a one-time achievement.

This time, the Chameleons could not complete another title run.

But according to Sabete, the outcome should not completely overshadow the progress made by the team throughout the campaign.

Nxled’s journey was filled with situations that challenged the players to adjust, communicate and trust one another. While the results may not have produced another championship, those experiences gave the Chameleons an opportunity to discover what works for them and what still needs to be improved.

That process could ultimately become valuable as the team prepares for its next challenge.

Winning a championship changes the expectations surrounding a team. Once Nxled established itself as a champion, opponents were no longer treating the Chameleons as an emerging squad. They became a target.

Every team wanted to beat them.

Every match carried additional pressure.

And every weakness became something opponents could attempt to exploit.

Learning to deal with that environment was part of Nxled’s development.

The Chameleons also had to continue building their chemistry while players took on different responsibilities. Volleyball requires precise coordination, and even talented individuals can struggle when their movements and decisions are not yet fully synchronized.

Sabete saw the importance of that development.

Rather than focusing exclusively on the championship that got away, she recognized the value of a team gradually becoming more comfortable with its identity.

That is particularly significant for a squad that wants to remain competitive in a league where the gap between contenders continues to shrink.

The PVL has become increasingly demanding. Teams are constantly improving their rosters, young players are making an impact and established stars continue to raise the standard of competition.

Nxled therefore cannot rely on its previous championship to remain among the league’s elite.

The Chameleons have to evolve.

Their latest campaign gave them plenty of information about what that evolution should look like.

Close matches revealed areas where the team needs greater composure. Difficult stretches exposed weaknesses in execution. At the same time, strong performances demonstrated the potential that remains within the group.

Those lessons can become the foundation of the team’s next chapter.

For Sabete, the important thing is that Nxled continues to move forward instead of allowing the loss of its championship to define the entire season.

A failed title defense does not automatically mean a failed campaign.

In fact, falling short can sometimes provide a team with lessons that are impossible to gain from winning alone.

A championship can validate a system, but adversity forces players to examine it.

Nxled now has the opportunity to do exactly that.

The Chameleons can identify the aspects of their game that need attention, strengthen their connections on the court and enter their next campaign with a better understanding of what is required to compete for another title.

That experience could also help the team’s younger players mature.

Playing under the pressure of defending a championship is different from entering the league as an underdog. Nxled has now experienced both sides of that equation. The players know what it feels like to chase a breakthrough, and they know what it feels like to have everyone else chasing them.

That perspective can be invaluable.

Sabete and her teammates will eventually have to put the disappointment behind them. The championship is gone, and another team now occupies the position Nxled once held.

But the Chameleons still have time to build something new.

Their next goal should not simply be to reclaim what they lost. It should be to develop into a team capable of consistently competing at the highest level.

That means improving the details, strengthening their confidence and continuing to develop the chemistry that Sabete believes is beginning to take shape.

Nxled’s latest season may have ended without another championship celebration.

Yet the campaign was not without purpose.

The Chameleons discovered more about their strengths, confronted their weaknesses and gained another season of experience against some of the best teams in the country.

For Sabete, that growth matters.

The crown may have slipped away, but Nxled’s journey is far from finished.

The Chameleons now have the opportunity to use everything they learned from this campaign to build a stronger version of themselves.

And perhaps when the next title opportunity arrives, the lessons from losing this one will be precisely what helps them win it back.
