A straight-sets victory over Cristian Garin of Chile means that Nick Kyrgios’ remarkable charge at Wimbledon is still alive and kicking. Fresh from a dramatic campaign at the All England Club, the unseeded Kyrgios kept his cool throughout on Court 1 and came out victorious to make it to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam singles event for the first time in his career.

After losing his serve in the opening game, the 27-year-old roared back and stormed past the Chilean Garin in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 7-6. With this win, Kyrgios has now topped his previous best performance at a Grand Slam singles event and took his SW19 campaign a step forward.

He now awaits Rafael Nadal, who miraculously got past Taylor Fritz despite an obvious abdominal pain in five sets.

Controversy has always dogged Kyrgios’ matches at Wimbledon, but this one was an exception. He largely kept his outbursts in check, even though he chuntered to himself and the officials occasionally during the match.

Afterwards, Kyrgios sat in his chair and appeared to take in the reality of making his first Grand Slam semi-final. It shows how seriously the Australian has taken his sport at the tournament.

The 27-year-old Garin didn’t make it all plain sailing for Kyrgios. He came flying out of the blocks to take the early break in the opener. But Kyrgios got the break back in game six at the third time of asking.

Garin then got past 4-5 down and faced two break points, but Kyrgios took his chance on his own serve and took the game to love, and with it the set, 6-4.

It was a more straightforward second set for Kyrgios, as he raced into a 4-1 lead. With his typically varied shot selection, Kyrgios controlled the proceedings and kept Garin at arms length in the score. He then took the set 6-3 to leave himself on the precipice of the last four.

Garin just refused to go away though, which made for a tense third set. Just one game saw break points, with three on Garin’s serve, but these points came and went.

The Chilean actually forged into a 5-3 lead afterwards, but Kyrgios took four points in a row to seal a momentous victory, despite having to replay match point at 6-5 up after an erroneous line call.

“An amazing atmosphere here again. I just never thought I’d be in a semi-final of a Grand Slam. I honestly thought my ship had sailed,” Kyrgios said.

“I didn’t go about things great earlier in my career, I may have wasted that little window. Just really proud of the way I have come out here and really proud of my team just to be able to put on a performance.”

“I have been playing this sport since I was seven, so to make the semi-final of a Grand Slam, I am pretty happy. I got lucky on a couple of break points and it could have easily been him standing here.”
