When Season 4 of True Detective comes on HBO, boxing aficionados will recognize a familiar face.

Kali Reis has been cast as a co-lead in the criminal drama anthology. Reis (19-7-1) is the current WBA, WBO, and IBO light welterweight champion.

“HBO Officially Orders ‘True Detective’ Season 4, Casts Kali Reis”

Reis will co-star with Oscar winner Jodie Foster in her first significant television acting role as an adult. The season will be filmed in Iceland.

True Detective: Night Country’s premise is as follows: “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”

Reis made her acting debut in the 2021 thriller Catch the Fair One, which she also co-wrote. At the Tribeca Film Festival, she got a special jury mention for outstanding actress, and the film won the audience prize. She was also nominated for best female lead at the Film Independent Spirit Awards for her performance.

Reis’ Professional Career

Reis was engaged in a terrible motorbike accident in 2012, which forced her to miss the rest of the boxing season. She returned in 2013, though, and fought for the WIBA championship in November of that year. Following the match, Reis earned further exposure in the sport. Reis won the IBA title on November 12, 2014, defeating Teresa Perozzi in Bermuda. Reis also trains kids boxing and works as a trainer. Reis earned her first major world championship in April 2016 when she defeated Maricela Cornejo for the vacant WBC World Middleweight title in New Zealand.

On May 5, 2018, HBO aired its inaugural women’s fight between Cecilia Braekhus and Reis, which Braekhus won.

Reis’ Accolades

At the 2021 Newport Beach Film Festival, Reis received the Jury Award for Best Actress. She was also nominated for Best Female Lead at the 37th Independent Spirit Awards.
