Jake Paul has supposedly discovered his next opponent.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, Paul is negotiating a contract for a fight on August 6 against Hasim Rahman Jr., the son of former two-time heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman. Paul had planned to fight Tommy Fury, but he was prevented from going to the United States last week.
The fight between Paul and Fury was set to take place as a co-main event at Madison Square Garden, featuring unified featherweight champion Amanda Serrano, who would make a mandatory title defense against Brenda Carabajal. It’s the second time a fight between them has been canceled, following Fury’s withdrawal from a December battle in Tampa due to an injury.
Instead, Paul (5-0, 4 KO) defeated former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in a rematch on December 18 with a sixth-round knockout.
According to Mirror’s Harry Davies, Paul has sparred with Rahman (12-1, 6 KO) several times in the past. The 31-year-old heavyweight applauded Paul’s progress between sparring sessions.
“I kind of expected the same thing that I boxed the first time and that’s not what I got,” Rahman explained to Sky Sports. “I got somebody that had a better right hand, I had somebody that was actually stepping in with the jab. The best thing about it is—I had somebody that could control his distance.”
Rahman was defeated by James McKenzie Morrison through TKO in April. Nonetheless, because of his expertise and family history, he is Paul’s most legitimate opponent in his boxing career.
