Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovkin 3 will take place on September 17th at T-Mobile Arena

Jul 15, 2022

If something isn’t broken, don’t repair it. Matchroom Boxing confirmed today that Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin’s trilogy fight on September 17 will take place at T-Mobile Arena, which hosted the pair’s first two encounters in 2017 and 2018.

The presale of tickets begins on Friday, June 24, with the full sale following on Monday, June 27.

T-Mobile Arena has been effectively Alvarez’s (57-2-2, 39 KO) home field since he knocked out Amir Khan in the venue’s seventh event since it opened in 2016. It hosted his victory against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., both Golovkin fights, his showdown with Daniel Jacobs, and his most recent loss to Dmitry Bivol in May.

In comparison, Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KO) has only contested in Las Vegas three times in his 16-year professional career.

With a date and place established in stone, we can certainly anticipate the start of an undercard in the near future. We will keep you updated.

Canelo Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez is a Mexican professional boxer born Santos Sal lvarez Barragán. He has won many world championships in four weight classes ranging from light middleweight to light heavyweight, including three unified titles and two lineal crowns. Alvarez is the first boxer in history to be crowned undisputed super middleweight champion, having held the WBA (Super), WBC, and Ring magazine belts since 2020, as well as the IBF and WBO crowns since 2021.

Alvarez is noted for his ability to exploit holes in his opponents’ guards while dodging blows with head and body mobility. He is also recognized for being a powerful body puncher. Alvarez is listed as the world’s top active fighter, pound for pound, by BoxRec and the Boxing Writers Association of America as of May 2022; fourth by ESPN; fifth by the TBRB; and sixth by The Ring. BoxRec, The Ring, TBRB, and ESPN all rank him as the world’s top active super middleweight.

Gennadiy Golovkin

Gennadiy Gennadyevich Golovkin, often known as “GGG” or “Triple G,” is a professional boxer from Kazakhstan. He is a two-time unified champion, having held the IBF belt since 2019 and the WBA (Super) title since April 2022. Between 2014 and 2018, he held the unified WBA (Super), WBC, and IBF belts. He is also a two-time IBO middleweight champion, currently reigning for the second time since 2019.

The Ring magazine named Golovkin the world’s top fighter, pound for pound, from September 2017 to September 2018. As of May 2022, BoxRec listed him as the world’s third best active boxer pound for pound, and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board placed him ninth (TBRB). BoxRec, The Ring, and TBRB all rank him as the world’s finest active middleweight, while ESPN ranks him second.
