Coach Yeng Guiao of Rain or Shine stated that there are still reasons to be hopeful about their chances of defeating TNT in their semifinal match, despite their setback in Game One of the PBA 49th Season Governors’ Cup.

Speaking to reporters following the Elasto Painters’ 90-81 loss to the Tropang Giga in the first game of the series on Wednesday, Guiao said he thought his side had a chance in Game One but that they had given themselves a bad start with their 22 turnovers.

“We got a little frustrated. We couldn’t get calls going our way. But I think the biggest factor is ‘yung masyado kaming maraming turnovers,” said Guiao. “We had 22 turnovers, 22 assists, one is to one ‘yung ratio namin sa assists to turnover. It’s just too big to give up to a team like TNT.”

With 1:47 remaining in the game, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson drained a four-point jumper to beat the shot clock and extend TNT’s advantage to 90-79. Guiao claimed Rain or Shine was still somewhat in the game.

Aaron Fuller’s need to be substituted late in the third quarter on his fourth foul was another regrettable decision made by Guiao.

Guiao stated that Rain or Shine was in a strong position to win the game because they had limited TNT to just 34% of the field in Game One, aside from the turnovers and Fuller’s foul problems.

After taking a three-day vacation from their five-game series against Magnolia in the quarterfinals, the two-time PBA champion also did not believe that fatigue was a role.

Rain or Shine will have a day off before facing TNT in Game Two at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum on Friday.

While everyone was celebrating TNT’s victory over Rain or Shine in Game One of their PBA Governors Cup semi final match, the Tropang Giga were hoping that Kelly Williams, who injured his calf on Wednesday night, would be able to return to the series.

After suffering the injury late in the first quarter, the former MVP was quickly taken out of the game and never came back.

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old forward’s face betrayed frustration as he withdrew to the Tropang Giga’s bench, unable to contain his feelings as he pummeled the Pocari Sweat cooler with his fist, surprising the TNT team—including chairman Ricky Vargas, who had just arrived for the series opener.

Later, he left and remained in the stairwell that led to the team dugout, where Dexter Aseron and other TNT physical therapists were following.

Almond Vosotros, CJ Payawal, and Ryan Reyes, Williams’ teammates, attempted to comfort him as he remained resolute in his quest for clarity.

He then went to the dugout to get the injured leg examined after a while.

In the six minutes that he was on the court, the 6-foot-6 former Gilas Pilipinas player only managed to produce one rebound.

Later, he returned and sat on the bench with the remaining Tropang Giga players, watching as the team defeated the Elasto Painters 90-81.

Reyes stated that the Fil-Am big man will undergo additional testing to determine the true nature of his illness.

Williams’ recovery period is limited to one day as Game 2 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Friday.
