MANILA, Philippines – Eager to make an immediate impact in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), expansion franchise Capital1 Solar Energy will conduct a two-day tryout at San Sebastian College-Recoletos.
Multi-titled mentor Roger Gorayeb, appointed by team owners and sisters Milka and Mandy Romero to spearhead the Power Spikers, will lead the tryouts with his capable staff.
Close to 100 players from various clubs, colleges and universities have signed up to participate, eagerly anticipating the chance to display their skills and potentially gain a coveted spot on the PVL’s newest squad.
Gorayeb and his staff aim to assemble a competitive roster capable of making some noise in Capital1’s debut conference. Given the limited preparation time, finding players with solid fundamentals and experience playing at a high level will be key.
The legendary coach will put the hopefuls through intense drills and simulated gameplay to assess not only their talent, but their coachability, work ethic and potential. Making the team will require standing out from the deep field of aspirants hungry for a pro opportunity.
Both Milka and Mandy Romero are thrilled about their maiden foray into sports team ownership, though aware of the challenges awaiting an expansion club.
Milka previously served as co-captain of the Ateneo de Manila University football team, while Mandy graduated Magna Cum Laude from Georgetown University and practiced Muay Thai. Their diverse backgrounds should help navigate the rigors of managing a professional volleyball franchise.
As newcomers to the PVL scene, Capital1 will need to carefully lay the groundwork on and off the court before contending with the league’s powerhouse squads.
Gorayeb’s sterling reputation and track record provide a strong foundation, but molding a cohesive unit in time for the Open Conference will be a tall task. The two-day tryout will mark the first step in assembling a squad ready for the bright lights of the PVL stage.
The team will likely target a balance of promising talents eager to make their mark mixed with veterans who offer valuable experience. At 67 years old, Gorayeb’s extensive connections across Philippine volleyball should allow Capital1 to quickly build a competitive roster.
Once he selects a pool of players from the tryouts, the real work begins in implementing his trademark disciplined, defense-oriented system. Instilling structure and chemistry in time for their debut will determine if Capital1 sinks or swims.
Gorayeb and his staff will also need to determine which players can grow into leading roles versus those best suited for complementary spots. Finding a rotation and lineup combination that clicks will be a process of trial and error.
The prospect of a PVL championship in their inaugural conference might seem like a lofty goal for the newly formed Capital1 Power Spikers. However, what holds greater importance at this juncture is a robust commencement that not only establishes credibility on the court but also garners fervent fan support.
Under the astute guidance of head coach Roger Gorayeb, the Power Spikers have a formidable leader renowned for his brilliant tactical mind and effective teaching skills. Despite the odds stacked against them, Gorayeb’s strategic approach and coaching prowess provide Capital1 with a fighting chance to make waves in their debut season.
The overwhelming interest generated by tryouts is a testament to the buzz and intrigue surrounding the Power Spikers as the new entrants in the league. The palpable enthusiasm signifies a promising start for the team, with Gorayeb now tasked with the meticulous process of selecting and grooming players to craft the most competitive squad possible.
The investment made by PVL team owners in entrusting Gorayeb with the helm of this project is monumental. In response to this trust, the seasoned coach vows to reciprocate by building Capital1 into a formidable contender through a methodical and committed approach. Gorayeb emphasizes that success will be cultivated one tryout and one practice at a time, highlighting the importance of a patient and progressive journey toward establishing Capital1 as a respected force in the PVL. While an immediate championship may be a stretch, the Power Spikers, with their seasoned mentor at the helm, are poised to carve out a place for themselves in the league, earning the respect and admiration of fans and opponents alike.
