The company that created the fantasy MMO Warframe, Digital Extremes, is currently working on a new MMO called Soulframe.

TennoCon 2022, the yearly gathering of Warframe, witnessed the unexpected unveiling of Soulframe, a brand-new game. The new game, developed by Digital Extremes, is a free-to-play open-world game similar to Warframe situated in a “sister” universe.

Creative director Geoff Crookes explained the sources of inspiration for Soulframe as follows:

“With Soulframe’s worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up… Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding, and we’ll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration.”

While the art style of the game is strikingly similar to Warframe, from the protagonist’s weapons to the adversaries he encounters in the teaser, Soulframe will be set in its own universe apart from Warframe and include more melee-focused gameplay. Lead member of Soulframe Steve Sinclair said, “Where ‘Warframe’ is focused on shooting, [‘Soulframe’ is] focused on melee. Where ‘Warframe’ is super fast and crazy high-speed, this one’s going to be a lot slower and heavier.”

With key creative leads leaving the previous game to focus on the new game, including Steve Sinclair, Digital Extremes will now work on both Warframe and Soulframe simultaneously. With a change in management, Rebecca Ford, a seasoned employee of the studio and the voice of Lotus in Warframe, will now serve as the game’s creative director.

The future of Warframe is good. By the end of the year, the wildly popular online sci-fi shooter from Digital Extremes will get a sizable addition dubbed Duviri Paradox that will offer a brand-new open-world setting with rogue-like aspects and an all-new story campaign to explore. Before that, the game will receive an update called Veilbreaker that includes a ton of new content for players to get their teeth into as well as the game’s 50th Warframe, Styanax.
