Two matches, two morale-crushing losses. The Indian cricket team, labeled as one of the toughest groups to ram down international cricket has been crushed in the first 2 matches, they need to be played in the ongoing ICC T20 World cup tournament in the UAE.
The 10-wicket loss to India, followed by an eight-wicket defeat at the hands of their ancient bogey team in ICC tournaments, the Kiwis, has meant that the men in blue square might be looking at an early exit from the tournament.
They still have 3 matches left to play, however as things stand Pakistan is the most favorites in fact to go through from group two as table toppers, followed by either New Zealand or Afghanistan.
But India hasn’t been automatically eliminated just yet. It would take a miracle for India to go through to the next round from here, however, the permutations and combinations are keeping them alive.
Here’s a fast and simple look, in seven points, at how the 2007 champions, India, may still make it to the semi-finals:
- We begin with the assumption idea that Pakistan, India, and New Zealand have all overwhelmed both Scotlands and Namibia
- If the above were to happen, Pakistan can top the group with ten points and in fact, pass with flying colors to the semi-finals
- The fight then boils all the way down to 3 groups — India, New Zealand, and Afghanistan for the one remaining slot
- If India loses to Afghanistan, they’ll be out of the race. The winner of the New Zealand-Afghanistan game then becomes the second semi-finalist from group two.
- If India beat Afghanistan, they’ll then eventually have six points. In this state of affairs, Afghanistan needs to beat New Zealand for India to have an opportunity
- If Afghanistan beats New Zealand and India beat Afghanistan, all 3 groups (India, New Zealand, and Afghanistan) are on six points
- In the state of affairs, it can boil all the way down to NRR and India will need to win extremely huge against the minnows (Namibia and Scotland) and hopefully Afghanistan too to own any probabilities of going through to the semi-finals.
