MANILA, Philippines – Thanks to his recent uptick in performance in the PBA Philippine Cup, Jeron Teng is once again the center of attention. The seasoned swingman has settled into a better groove with the San Miguel Beermen, where he has benefited from greater playing time and displayed a more polished style on offense and defense.

Teng proved to be a dependable bench player in the early going of the conference. San Miguel averaged 8.5 points per game in around 13 minutes of action in his first two games. He helped the squad get off to a solid start in the conference with his timely and effective contributions. When compared to his earlier conference efforts, where his minutes and function were more constrained, these figures represented a substantial improvement.

In 14 minutes of play, Teng contributed to the team’s victory over Meralco with 11 points, 3 boards, and a steal. His defensive play was more impressive than his offensive play. He gladly accepted the responsibility from the coaching staff to defend the team’s leading scorers during practice. The coaching staff came to trust him more when he put in the time in practice, and he started seeing more playing time in games.

Teng, who is now 31 years old, had been with Converge and Alaska before joining the Beermen. As a leading scorer, he frequently stole the show for his former teams. But Teng had to settle for a supporting role because San Miguel’s championship-caliber team was so full of seasoned talent. He was determined to make an impact wherever he could, especially on defense and with hustle plays, despite struggling at first with limited playing time.

A combination of Teng’s flexibility and professionalism started to yield results after a while. He trained hard to hone his defense, work on his floor communication, and be ready to contribute in short spurts. His coaches took notice of his reliability and hard work, which led to increased playing time in official games and greater trust from the coaches.

On the offensive end, Teng focused on improving his jump shot, which was one of his weakest areas. His shooting form and self-assurance were both enhanced by his committed offseason preparation. He has become a more reliable danger because of this, especially in situations when he must quickly aim and shoot. His improved floor spacing and ability to adapt to San Miguel’s movement-based, spacing-based, and ball-sharing offensive tactics are direct results of this.

San Miguel now has more depth because of his versatility as a defender and his physicality on the wings. Because of his versatility, he can be a trusted addition to any lineup that needs rebounding, energy plays, or perimeter defense. Teng has also matured as a player by playing inside the system and picking and choosing his shots.

Although Teng’s point totals aren’t as impressive as those of the team’s superstars, his influence extends well beyond that. He is an asset in second-unit rotations because of his defensive zeal, positional versatility, and low turnover rate. He has grown on the coaching staff this season, and they now see him as a reliable player who can help in crucial moments.

In the 2023–24 Commissioner’s Cup, which San Miguel won earlier this year, Teng made his PBA championship debut. Following six years without a league championship, his triumph was a watershed moment in his career. Because his legendary PBA father, Alvin Teng, won nine titles with the same organization, the accomplishment was also meaningful on a personal level. This event, which connected Jeron’s family’s history with his present, gave his voyage more symbolic significance.

Teng was a top-five draft pick and a dominant force in college basketball before he joined San Miguel and became famous for his scoring ability. Both with Alaska and Converge, he maintained point averages in the double digits. But his development as a professional has been highlighted by his shift into a supporting position for a squad that is in the hunt for the championship.

Even when he isn’t in the lineup to score, Teng has proven under head coach Leo Austria that he can make a significant impact.
