MANILA, Philippines – Rain or Shine forward Leonard “Santi” Santillan has been named the PBA Press Corps–Pilipinas Live Player of the Week for the period of May 14 to 18, 2025. The recognition follows his crucial role in leading the Elasto Painters to a major victory over the previously unbeaten Magnolia Hotshots during the ongoing PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup.

Santillan delivered an all-around performance that significantly contributed to Rain or Shine’s 119–105 triumph at the Ynares Center II in Montalban, Rizal. He finished the game with a double-double, recording 17 points and 13 rebounds. His presence on both ends of the court was instrumental in halting Magnolia’s four-game winning streak and improving Rain or Shine’s record to 4–2.

The 6-foot-5 forward outperformed a strong field of contenders for the weekly honor. Also considered for the citation were teammate Adrian Nocum, Barangay Ginebra’s Scottie Thompson, Converge FiberXers’ Alec Stockton, and San Miguel Beermen’s Rodney Brondial. However, it was Santillan’s composure, hustle, and ability to deliver during crucial possessions that earned him the distinction.

This marks Santillan’s second Player of the Week recognition in this conference. He now joins a select group of players who have received the award multiple times in the 2025 Philippine Cup. The group includes Calvin Oftana of TNT Tropang Giga, Joshua Munzon of NorthPort, Zavier Lucero of Magnolia, and Bong Quinto of Meralco. The honor reflects his growing consistency and expanding leadership role within Rain or Shine’s roster.

Santillan’s emergence has been vital for the Elasto Painters, especially during a challenging stretch early in the conference. The team was forced to cope without the services of veteran big man Beau Belga, as well as promising frontcourt players Keith Datu and Caelan Tiongson, all sidelined by injuries. With a depleted rotation, Santillan stepped up and filled the void. He played increased minutes and took on greater responsibility, delivering in the paint and showing his value as a power forward capable of matching up against the league’s best.

Upon the return of Belga and Datu, Santillan was able to shift back to his natural position. This transition helped maximize his mobility, rebounding, and scoring efficiency. The presence of a complete frontline allowed Rain or Shine to spread the floor more effectively, giving Santillan better looks and improving overall team chemistry. His ability to adapt to different roles and lineups has earned the trust of the coaching staff and reinforced his standing as a dependable presence.

Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao has praised Santillan’s work ethic and willingness to do the intangibles. While the team has leaned on a system-oriented approach, it has been Santillan’s energy and effort that have often made the difference. Whether defending multiple positions, crashing the boards, or hitting timely baskets, his play has consistently sparked momentum shifts.

Beyond the statistics, Santillan’s impact has also been reflected in Rain or Shine’s improved standing. From starting the conference 0–2, the team has since won four of its last five games. The recent victory over Magnolia was not only a statement win but also a showcase of Rain or Shine’s potential when firing on all cylinders. The team displayed excellent spacing, quick ball movement, and disciplined execution—traits that have become hallmarks of Guiao’s system and that Santillan has embraced fully.

As the elimination round continues, Rain or Shine finds itself in a favorable position to compete for a top-four finish. With Santillan’s form holding steady, the Elasto Painters appear poised to challenge the league’s elite teams. His rebounding and hustle plays, in particular, have added a physical edge to the team’s identity.

Santillan’s Player of the Week award comes at a critical juncture in the season, as Rain or Shine prepares for a string of tough opponents. Maintaining consistency, minimizing turnovers, and continuing to dominate the boards will be key to their sustained success.

Looking ahead, the Elasto Painters hope to carry their momentum deeper into the Philippine Cup. With Santillan leading the charge and the team regaining full health, Rain or Shine is expected to remain competitive throughout the remainder of the tournament. His recent performance has not only earned him individual accolades but also elevated his role as a core piece in Rain or Shine’s championship ambitions.
