Converge faces Terrafirma on Day 2 of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Friday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig, looking to improve from its seventh-place league debut.
At 3 p.m., the FiberXers and the Dyip battle it out. The league’s return to one of its former favorite playing locations—the actual setting of spectacular wars in the 1980s.
With the aid of import Quincy Miller, who was selected with the 38th overall choice in the 2012 NBA Draft, Converge continues its voyage under new coach Aldin Ayo.
Ayo has reconnected with some of the key players from his championship campaigns with the La Salle Green Archers and the Letran Knights in the UAAP and NCAA, and they will begin their pro-level campaign against the Terrafirma team that will be relying on balik-PBA import Lester Prosper.
The FiberXers did rather well in their first PBA outing, making the playoffs and taking seventh place with five victories and seven defeats in the most recent all-Filipino competition, coached by Jeffrey Cariaso.
However, the team’s administration wants more, so they chase a greater objective while using a different playing style under the direction of their new coach.
At least in their training, they are pleased with what they are seeing.
“I think our team is young. The question is how to compete with these traditional teams, and I figured kailangan namin fast team,” said team owner Dennis Anthony Uy.
“Sabi ko mas maganda yung galing sa collegiate, medyo agresibo mag-train ng mga bata, different and not the traditional way. That’s the strategy that came to mind. We decided to find the suitable coach, at finally nahanap namin si Ayo,” Uy added.
In the meantime, Terrafirma is staying with its veteran staff and think tank in the hopes that the rapport established over time will provide fruit today.
The Dyip can only move forward after a dismal performance in the Philippine Cup.
