One of the biggest trades this year came when Magnolia dealt veteran forward Calvin Abueva to NorthPort in a multi-player swap. Along with Abueva, Magnolia sent Jerrick Balanza and a 2026 second-round draft pick to NorthPort in exchange for rising star William Navarro. For NorthPort, the move was about injecting experience and toughness into a young roster. Abueva’s energy, defense, and grit are expected to provide leadership in a team still searching for consistency. On the flip side, Magnolia saw this as a long-term investment. Navarro is younger, versatile, and has the tools to become a future cornerstone of their lineup.

Another notable transaction involved a one-for-one trade between TNT Tropang Giga and Converge FiberXers. TNT acquired Jordan Heading, a steady guard known for his shooting and decision-making, while Converge received the signing rights to Mikey Williams—a proven scorer and former Finals MVP. Williams had been on a break from the league, but signs point to a possible comeback with Converge. If he returns to form, Converge instantly becomes a more dangerous offensive team.

NorthPort was also busy earlier in the year, swapping big man Abu Tratter for Blackwater’s James Kwekuteye. It was a straightforward trade that addressed each team’s needs: NorthPort added size and energy to its frontcourt, while Blackwater gained a young, promising wing who can contribute on both ends.

Aside from the player movement, there’s been plenty of buzz around coaching changes. The most surprising news came from Magnolia, where long-time head coach Chito Victolero stepped down. Taking his place is none other than LA Tenorio—yes, the same LA Tenorio who’s still active as a player. His move to the head coaching role signals a new chapter for Magnolia, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll serve in both capacities or eventually retire as a player.

Over at Converge, the coaching situation has been less clear. After Aldin Ayo’s exit, Franco Atienza has taken over as interim head coach. There are also strong rumors that Pampanga’s coach and governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda may take a more active role with the FiberXers. While some believe his position is mostly symbolic, others suggest he’s already influencing the team’s direction behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, other franchises are doubling down on stability. NLEX welcomed back veteran coach Jong Uichico, while San Miguel reinstated Leo Austria following the departure of Jorge Gallent. These teams are banking on experience and familiarity to guide them through the rest of the season.

In all, the latest wave of trades and coaching changes is giving this PBA season a fresh feel. With new players adjusting to new systems and coaches stepping into leadership roles, there’s a renewed sense of unpredictability. As the race to the Governors’ Cup heats up, fans can expect more twists and turns—and possibly, a few more surprises along the way.
