MANILA, Philippines – In their preseason friendly in Ilagan City, Isabela, the Meralco Bolts defeated the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters 95-89, demonstrating tenacity in the closing minutes and giving supporters a fun sneak peek at what the PBA’s golden jubilee season will hold. The match, which took place at the Isabela Convention Center, was Rain or Shine’s first tune-up loss following victories over Converge and NLEX. The outcome was a form of atonement for Meralco, which had lost a close game against the FiberXers only days before.

For the most part, the game was fiercely contested, with both teams practicing rotations and trading leads. Halfway through the fourth quarter, with the score tied at 71-all, Meralco changed tactics. A crucial 10-1 run by the Bolts put them ahead going into the closing minutes. Allein Maliksi stopped the rush with a long-range dagger, giving Meralco the upper hand. Rain or Shine found it difficult to get back on track after that as Meralco’s defense confined their transition offense and forced rushed shots.

Stanley Pringle made his first out-of-town appearance since joining the team in Rain or Shine. Although Pringle showed glimpses of his ability to score goals and create plays, the Elasto Painters’ entire performance faltered in the last moments. Their failure to stop Meralco’s late-game surge brought to light their persistent consistency problems, especially when rotations went well into the bench. This defeat highlighted the areas that still require improvement before the regular season starts, despite the team’s impressive results in previous warm-ups.

Meralco, on the other hand, showed more poise after stumbling during their last outing. Their defensive discipline and ball movement were the main factors in their late-game poise. When Rain or Shine tried to speed up possessions, the Bolts maintained their structure by blocking lanes and requiring low-percentage looks. Their offense simultaneously flowed with balanced contributions from both role players and veterans, who each made key baskets. The Bolts used the execution in the last moments as a model for how to win close games.

The results were greatly influenced by depth and endurance. Playing in their third tune-up, Rain or Shine appeared worn out. In the closing minutes, rotations grew less precise, which resulted in defensive lapses and possession waste. By turning turnovers into transition points and chasing shooters off the perimeter with younger legs, Meralco took advantage of the situation. The difference proved to be crucial, as the Bolts were more focused in the last five minutes of play.

This defeat does not overshadow the Elasto Painters’ encouraging preseason. Their victories over Converge and NLEX demonstrated their capacity for successful scheme execution. Although Pringle’s integration is still in the early stages, once chemistry is established, his presence should bring another dimension. Younger players for Rain or Shine are also continuing to accumulate important experience, which may come in handy as the season grinds on. The loss did, however, highlight how crucial it is to finish games stronger and maintain effort for four complete quarters.

Meralco can benefit greatly from the outcome. They demonstrated maturity and adaptability by fixing the errors from their last tune-up loss. More significantly, they demonstrated the ability to manage a close game when under duress. The Bolts will have to rely on these practices in games where every possession matters as Season 50 approaches. For the time being, the triumph in Ilagan gives preparations more impetus and boosts morale.

The game was also important from an organizational perspective. The PBA’s impressive preseason showcase in Isabela broadens its reach as it continues to strive for a more regional presence. The league’s ability to provide high-quality basketball to fans outside of Metro Manila was reaffirmed by a competitive game, fervent local support, and excellent play from both teams. The schedule may change as a result of these efforts; more provincial games are probably going to be included in the historic season.

Meralco and Rain or Shine both depart Ilagan with important lessons learned. While the Elasto Painters pinpointed areas that needed improvement, the Bolts regained their poise. These early lessons will influence how both teams compete against elite opponents when the real season begins.
