MANILA, Philippines – When the lights were shining brightest, Robert Bolick took center stage once more and gave a performance that made everyone remember why he has grown to be one of the PBA’s most dangerous scorers. In a game that didn’t feel decided until the very end, NLEX defeated Titan Ultra 92–83, thanks in large part to his hot hand and strong leadership. The type of game that kept the fans energized included close possessions, quick changes in momentum, and a player who just wouldn’t let his team go.
Bolick scored a whopping 36 points in the end, but it was the timing of those points that really stood out. In the fourth quarter alone, when every possession felt like a little war, he exploded for 17 points. Bolick changed tactics when the score was tied at 65 going into the last frame. With each shot, his confidence increased, and he started setting the pace. The crucial moment occurred during a dagger that broke Titan Ultra’s resistance and a deep three that banked in to end an 83-all tie. Shortly after, Bolick sent a deep, quarterback-style pass that Dominic Fajardo completed cleanly, extending the lead and solidifying NLEX’s victory.
The completeness of Bolick’s performance added to its already exceptional quality. In addition to his scoring rampage, he grabbed two steals, smashed the rebounds for five, and dished out ten assists. He was everywhere, starting fast breaks, rotating on defense, and setting the table for teammates. It was one of those occasions when a star not only scores goals but also influences the game’s overall feel. Later, NLEX coach Jong Uichico expressed his gratitude openly, stating that Bolick has established himself as the offensive center and a pillar of support even when defenses shift and pressure increases. Every pivotal play demonstrated the two players’ faith in one another.
With the victory, NLEX moved up to 6–2 in the standings, which now puts them in the same upper tier as Rain or Shine. Bolick himself didn’t seem interested in any early celebrations, despite the fact that it’s a good position. While acknowledging the victory, he noted that some of the league’s best teams will be playing them in their upcoming stretch, which will put NLEX’s consistency and maturity to the test. Even though the team is gaining momentum, they are aware that they haven’t reached their top yet.
Titan Ultra forced them to fight for every inch, but NLEX easily won. In an effort to push his team into the victory column, Calvin Abueva put up a tough, focused performance, scoring 27 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. He battled inside, pushed the ball, and kept Titan Ultra inside striking range while playing with his signature vigor. Von Pessumal scored 14 points and Joshua Munzon added 19, igniting a game that featured 15 lead changes and eight ties. Titan Ultra just wouldn’t fold—until the final NLEX surge caused separation. They have already lost six of their last eight games, and as the tournament moves quickly along, their chances of making the playoffs are dwindling.
However, there were moments when Titan Ultra appeared capable, focused, and disciplined. Closing was the issue. Titan Ultra found it difficult to react when the Road Warriors increased the tempo of their defense in the fourth quarter. A few expensive turnovers, rushed shots, and missed looks allowed NLEX to create a buffer. When Bolick started striking from all sides, Titan Ultra was unable to keep up with the barrage of blows.
Furthermore, NLEX prevented momentum from ever swinging back once it had started.
Bolick’s consistent support, especially from the bench, was one underappreciated aspect of the victory. With role players making the small plays that don’t typically appear on highlight reels—fast rotations, deft fouls, and crucial rebounds—the Road Warriors maintained their composure in the closing minutes. In a game where there was little room for error until the very last seconds, those subtleties were crucial.
NLEX goes into their two-week break feeling more confident and like they have a stronger idea of who they are. They have demonstrated their ability to perform well under duress, win close games, and depend on a star who performs best under duress. On the other hand, Titan Ultra is in a challenging juncture. They need answers quickly, but the effort and energy are there. Their window for regaining their position is closing, so they need to start forming the habits necessary to win games right away.
