MANILA, Philippines – At the PhilSports Arena, the Converge FiberXers defeated the Terrafirma Dyip 117-103, overcoming a huge 18-point deficit to prolong their run in the PBA Philippine Cup. In addition to moving Converge to a 6–4 record, the victory on May 28 was a breakthrough for sophomore forward King Caralipio, who played a key role in the comeback in the fourth quarter that sealed the victory.

Converge looked sluggish and ill-prepared as the game started. Terrafirma started the game with vigor and determination, making three-pointers early on and succeeding inside the paint. Midway in the second quarter, the Dyip had a 61–43 lead thanks to their aggressive offensive strategy. At that moment, it appeared as though Converge might crumble due to their own defensive errors and ineffective offensive strategy.

Franco Atienza, the team’s head coach, insisted that his players play with poise and intensity while remaining composed and focused. The FiberXers’ steady chipping away at the deficit, which by the third quarter had shrunk to single digits, validated their faith. The momentum had already changed at the start of the last quarter. And King Caralipio was the one who stepped up during that pivotal 12-minute period.

Caralipio showed poise, efficiency, and confidence in the fourth quarter, scoring eight of his team-high 18 points. He recorded his first double-double of the conference with 10 rebounds and 7 of 10 field goals, including a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the arc. More significantly, his effort provided Converge with much-needed encouragement during the last stretch run when the result was still up in the air.

The triumph demonstrated the depth and development of the team and enhanced Converge’s postseason standing. Once dependent on a select few players, the FiberXers now have a roster that is well-rounded and capable of producing from a variety of spots. Four other players, excluding Caralipio, scored in double figures. Justin Arana contributed 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Justine Baltazar scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Rookie Schonny Winston added 16 points and demonstrated versatility on both ends of the court, while Alec Stockton scored 17 points and made good use of the ball.

Converge’s ability to close games, which was frequently lacking in prior conferences, was demonstrated by their dominant fourth quarter, in which they defeated Terrafirma 30–11. Terrafirma was unable to react to their full-court pressure, quick transition offense, and enhanced perimeter shooting. The FiberXers were able to stop Dyip’s earlier offensive rhythm by making defensive improvements, especially tighter perimeter coverage and improved pick-and-roll defense.

The breakthrough performance for Caralipio was a watershed in his career. Expectations were high after becoming MVP of the NCAA Finals for the Letran Knights. Caralipio’s work ethic and versatility in practice have been frequently mentioned by coach Atienza, who has been outspoken about his potential. The triumph over Terrafirma was concrete evidence of that possibility. It’s interesting to note that Converge has won all four of the games in which Caralipio has scored in double figures this conference, which is a positive indication of his increasing influence.

Terrafirma, the losing team, once again showed promise in the beginning but was unable to maintain its lead. In the first half, they made eight three-pointers, but when it counted most, their offense faltered. Louie Sangalang scored 18 points, while Stanley Pringle led the Dyip with 23. Regretfully, the rest of the crew was unable to keep up the pace. Converge was able to take control and pull away because of turnovers, missed free throws, and a lack of defensive stops in the closing minutes.

With a 1–8 record, the Dyip are now essentially out of the running for the playoffs, but they will play their remaining games with pride and growth in mind. Even though the outcomes might not be ideal, head coach Johnedel Cardel continues to prioritize team cohesiveness and individual development.

Converge, meantime, is anticipating a crucial matchup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium on June 11 against the San Miguel Beermen. The FiberXers are now aiming for a top-four finish, which would give them a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals, now that they have guaranteed their postseason berth.
