MANILA, Philippines – After placing her name in the 2024 Korean V-League Women’s Asian Quota Draft, three-time MVP of the Premier Volleyball League Tots Carlos will travel abroad to try her luck.
Together with Mylene Paat of Chery Tiggo and MJ Phillips of Petro Gazz, who were all drafted back, Carlos is one of three Filipina spikers in the 36-player pool that KOVO has revealed.
This would mark the Creamline star’s first foreign performance, if she is chosen.
The Gwangju AI Peppers, who had a dismal 5-31 record at the end of the 2023–24 season and subsequently parted company with the team following the competition, had actually selected Phillips fifth overall the previous year.
Iris Tolenada, Majoy Baron, Jia De Guzman, Dindin Santiago-Manabat, and Paat, on the other hand, were not selected in the previous selection.
Phillips is anticipated to return to the Angels later in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference, while Carlos as well as Paat are presently in the middle of their opposite semifinal runs with the Cool Smashers and the power source Crossovers, respectively.
Notable names that are also included in the draft are Indonesian sensation Megawati Pertiwi and Thai standout Pornpun Guedpard, who was chosen first overall by Hwaseong IBK in the previous year’s draft.
Toys, Paat, and MJ will try their luck in the 2024 Korean V-League Asian Quota Draft.
The Petro Gazz star left the team after the end of the most recent KVL season. It is anticipated that she would return to the Angels at a later date in the 2024 PVL All-Filipino Conference, where her mother team is still vying for a semifinal position.
Carlos and Paat, two past PVL MVPs and winners, hope to make waves in the world of volleyball abroad.
Carlos has already had a successful domestic career, winning four titles and three MVP awards with Creamline. Despite this, he has not yet participated in an international league.
After hitting 38 points in a thrilling five-set victory over Cignal, Carlos broke the PVL single-game scoring record for a local player. His quest for history continued.
Paat won her Thailand League bronze medal after finishing as the competition’s top scorer. The Chery Tiggo ace, on the other hand, has international pedigree following a successful one-year stay with Thailand’s winningest club, Nakhon Ratchasima VC.
In the KOVO Women’s Asian Quota Draft scheduled for later this month in Jeju, South Korea, Carlos, Paat, and Phillips will soon find out their eventual fate.
In retrospect, Chery Tiggo continues to wow Cignal.
Chery Tiggo halted another strong opponent, Cignal, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24, to further establish its lead in the competition for a berth in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference semifinals at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Thursday night.
When the Crossovers stopped the HD Spikers’ penultimate attack, siblings EJ and Eya Laure came through big time.
With victories over formidable teams Creamline and Petro Gazz, Chery Tiggo’s run of five straight victories was outstanding. It propelled the Crossovers to a third-place tie with the Cool Smashers and the Angels, each with a 6-2 record.
In the first conference of the season, Cignal fell to 5-3 in a heartbreaking defeat that damaged their hopes of making it to the semifinals in the league run by Sports Vision.
The foundation of Chery Tiggo’s triumph was impressive comebacks in each of the three sets, especially the opening one as the Crossovers overcame deficits of seven points early on and three points later.
The Crossovers, headed by Eya Laure, Ara Galang, and Pauline Gaston, mounted an amazing comeback after trailing 21–24 to take the set and surprise the HD Spikers. They scored five points in a row.
Midway through the second set, Cignal likewise had the lead, but Chery Tiggo once more came back to win by a dominating five points to go up two sets.
Ces Molina finished with 16 points, while Jovelyn Gonzaga ended with eight points, Gandler, Riri Meneses, and playmaker Gel Cayuna all finished with six points. Ces Molina was the only other HD Spiker to score in double digits.
Roselyn Doria struggled with five points, but the HD Spikers’ Jacqueline Acuña contributed four markers.
