Spain’s first home loss in four years has enraged Luis Enrique

Sep 26, 2022

Luis Enrique, who witnessed his team suffer its first home loss in four years, called Spain’s 2-1 loss to Switzerland the most error-strewn of his tenure.

In Zaragoza, Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo sealed a 2-1 Nations League victory for the visitors, knocking Spain off the top spot in League A Group 2 and setting up a Tuesday matchup with Portugal for a spot at the finals.

The setback marked Spain’s first at home since losing 3-2 to England in the Nations League in October 2018 and just their second competitive home international defeat in nearly 20 years.

“Losing is always something that hurts, no matter how long you’ve gone unbeaten,” Luis Enrique said. “Credit to the opponent; they were always dangerous, they pressed well.

“I can’t remember a match with so many technical errors, especially on the two corners where we conceded goals. We lost too many easy balls, we didn’t defend well.

“I repeat that I don’t remember a single match under my reign with so many errors. Now we simply have to win away to Portugal.”

In response to any worries that might have existed over his team’s World Cup preparations in Qatar, Luis Enrique said: “I’ve got no doubts for the World Cup and how we’ll do based on this. When you lose, you reflect and gain knowledge.

Murat Yakin, the coach of Switzerland, however, stated that his squad had worked on finding a way to attack a perceived weakness.

“We knew we could profit from set plays and so it proved to be,” Yakin, whose side face Brazil, Cameroon and Serbia in Group G, said. “We were so well organised, we remained solid and the goals we scored came at the perfect moments.

On November 23, Spain will face Costa Rica to open their World Cup campaign. Germany and Japan will also be in their group along with Spain.
