TOTTENHAM, England – Report and highlights of Mohamed Salah’s recent scoring streak, which includes nine goals in eight games, courtesy to one outstanding goal and a gift from Eric Dier. Harry Kane grabbed one back for Spurs, but they are still fourth in the Premier League, seven points ahead of eighth-place Liverpool, who still have a game remaining.
Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2 to1 in north London to reclaim the top-four fight in the Premier League. Liverpool held off a late Tottenham onslaught.
In their previous two league games, Jurgen Klopp’s team had suffered shocking losses to relegation-threatened Leeds and Nottingham Forest, but they came out firing against Spurs, with in-form Salah scoring after only 11 minutes with a deft touch and finishing into the bottom corner.
A gift from Eric Dier allowed Liverpool to score again just before halftime. Ivan Perisic had a header deflected onto the post by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, while Ryan Sessegnon had a penalty appeal denied after Trent Alexander-challenge. Arnold’s Salah (40) sprinted through to chip in his ninth goal in eight outings after the center-back misjudged a headed towards his own goal.
Harry Kane (70) scored a spectacular goal after being set up by substitute Dejan Kulusevski, who was sent off early in the second half. Tottenham, for the second time this season, improved after the interval. Alisson once again pushed a Perisic shot against the post.
Liverpool held on for their first away win in the Premier League this season to move up to eighth and within seven points of fourth-placed Spurs, with a game in hand. Rodrigo Bentancur came close with a few headers, and Harry Kane glanced wide as Spurs frantically sought another late goal.
How Liverpool returned to the Premier League winning ways
This season, both of these teams have struggled to get out to fast starts in games. However, Liverpool exploded out of the gate, and inside three minutes, Darwin Nunez forced Hugo Lloris to work for his 100th straight start in the Premier League for Spurs.
The Uruguayan striker found more room in the left channel and after angling another shot wide of the far post, he recovered his bearings and laid off for Salah to give Liverpool the lead with a deft touch and finish into the bottom corner.
Spurs were energized by the goal, and Perisic, who started up front with Kane in a 5 to 3 to 2 formation, came inches from answering four minutes later when his header smacked into Alisson at close range and went onto the woodwork. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s attempt was then blocked by the Brazilian.
On minute 19, Spurs had a strong penalty claim rejected. Alexander-Arnold looked to push Sessegnon in the back as he got the better of him and fell to the ground in the box. The challenge appeared to be quite similar to the one that cost Joao Cancelo of Manchester City his life and gave Fulham a penalty on Saturday, but a VAR review exonerated Alexander-Arnold.
The right-back, who had previously shown off his excellent passing range, continued to struggle against Sessegnon’s pace, but just before halftime, Liverpool moved two goals ahead courtesy to a poor decision from Dier, whose misdirected header allowed Salah to break in on goal and coolly double Liverpool’s lead.
The Reds appeared to be in perfect control at that time, but this season, Tottenham under Antonio Conte has a history of playing better after the break, and Alisson had to make a strong save on a header from Dier off a corner to start the second half.
