AL JANOUB, Qatar – Tuesday marked the start of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, as France began the defense of its championship by defeating Australia 4-1 with four straight goals.

In the first 10 minutes of the game, Australia scored a goal and then kept attacking, which was a startling development. But France reversed the tables, leading 2-1 at the break and adding two more goals in the second.

While Denmark and Tunisia played to a scoreless draw earlier, Saudi Arabia shocked Argentina. Poland and Mexico also fought to a scoreless draw.

The top plays from the group stage action on Tuesday are listed below.

As the French team prepares to play in its opening 2022 World Cup match, Kylian Mbappe and the rest of the group arrive at the field in style.

As soon as the game began, Australia launched its shock attempt when Craig Goodwin scored off a cross with his left boot.

Lucas Hernandez, a French left defender, was forced to leave the game early due to an injury.

His replacement was his younger brother, Theo.

Mitchell Duke’s shot nearly helped Australia’s upset attempt when it went off his foot. However, the strike occurred right outside the post office.

Hernandez helped France recover after a corner kick reset the game, and when he crossed the ball into the box, Adrien Rabiot’s header found the back of the net to tie the score at one.

On a center ball from Rabiot in the box, Olivier Giroud, the second-highest goal scorer in French history, gave his team the lead.

Jackson Irvine’s header off the post prevented Australia from scoring its second goal, keeping the score at 2 to 1 in favor of France.

In order to tie Thierry Henry for the most goals scored abroad in French history, the French player sought to score off a bicycle kick.

The French increased their lead to 4 to 1 after Mbappe and Giroud collaborated on a cross. With his 51st goal in international competition, Giroud has tied Henry for the most in French history. He scored the goal off a header.
