LONDON, England – Antonio Conte’s team defeated Everton. Late in the game, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg added a second goal with a curling effort that was slightly deflected into the goal by Alex Iwobi.
Despite early dominance by Spurs, the visitors had the two greatest chances of the first half and were upset not to have converted both chances.
As Antonio Conte’s team defeated Everton, Harry Kane scored the game’s first goal to record his 400th Tottenham appearance and help his team go closer to Premier League leaders Arsenal.
After Jordan Pickford, another member of the England team, tripped Kane in the area, the Toffees were unable to hang on to Matt Doherty’s shot. Kane then shattered the Toffees’ resistance from the penalty spot.
Late in the game, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg added a second goal with a curling effort that was slightly deflected into the goal by Alex Iwobi.
Despite early dominance by Spurs, the visitors had the two greatest chances of the first half and were upset not to have converted both chances.
Following Demarai Gray’s unsuccessful attempt to connect with Conor Coady’s long pass over the top of the Tottenham defense, Hojbjerg’s errant touch allowed Amadou Onana to send a rocket over the crossbar.
Early in the second half, Kane fired a rasping volley straight at Pickford, but the Toffees goalkeeper was helpless to stop the 29-year-penalty, which was his 14th goal against Everton in 15 Premier League games, or Hojbjerg’s late strike.
With the win, Conte’s squad moves up to equal second place with Manchester City in terms of points and drops Everton to 14th, only one point behind north London rivals Arsenal.
Spurs are off to a good start thanks to prolific Kane.
In addition to giving Spurs their greatest point total at this point in a Premier League season with 23 points after 10 games, Kane has now scored in five straight games in the top tier for the first time in his career.
Despite lucking out in the first half and having a real chance of falling behind at the break, the home team certainly deserved to win after a dominant performance.
But in the second half, Frank Lampard’s team was no match for Spurs, and it didn’t take long for Spurs’ pressure to pay off when Pickford used an outstretched arm to bring down England teammate Kane inside the six-yard box.
Kane’s penalty brings him eight goals closer to Jimmy Greaves’ 266-goal Tottenham record.
With five minutes left, Hojbjerg scored the winning goal by receiving a cross from Rodrigo Bentancur and deflecting it off Iwobi into the far corner.
The sole negative from the hosts’ perspective was Richarlison’s injury in the second half, when he fell holding his left calf and was replaced by Yves Bissouma. Richarlison was a former Everton forward.
Conte remarked afterward, “We hope it’s not too serious.” He will get an MRI tomorrow after feeling a discomfort in his calf.
Toothless Toffees pay for their missed opportunities in the first half.
Everton’s boss Lampard noted before the game that the team had grown in character since they narrowly avoided relegation the season before.
Even though the Merseyside club has improved much since losing 5 to 0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in March, the visitors were cautious in the opening parts of this match, with the midfield trio of Iwobi, Onana, and Idrissa Gueye operating deep in front of the Toffees’ back five to frustrate Conte’s team.
When Coady released Gray, Everton could have taken the lead, but the winger’s finish lacked composure. Everton, though, quickly had the upper hand in the game.
The same was true of Onana’s erratic shot that came soon after, when the Everton midfielder took advantage of Hojbjerg’s loss of focus inside the Tottenham half.
However, the second half was all one-way traffic as the Toffees were unable to muster a chance on Hugo Lloris’ net.
This season, their total of four attempts is the lowest in a Premier League game.
