Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is set to announce their new captain for the upcoming IPL 2022 on March 12. The team’s former captain, Virat Kohli, stepped down from his role at the end of last season after steering the team for nine seasons. As expected, there is a flurry of speculations as to who the new captain might be. After the IPL 2022 mega auction held last February, several names have emerged as frontrunners for the new role for RCB. Here are the top candidates: Faf du Plessis Faf du Plessis is the leading contender for captaincy at RCB. The former South African skipper has steered South Africa in two WorldT20 campaigns. He was also part of the Chennai Super Kings squad prior to his release at the end of the auction. As an experienced campaigner, du Plessis has around 100 IPL games under his belt and is considered the favorite for the RCB captaincy due to his vast experience in the league. Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell, Australia’s explosive batter, was bought by RCB for a mind-blowing  Rs 14.25 crore ahead of the 2021 season. Last year, the right-hand batter scored 513 runs at an average of 42.75. Maxwell played with Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians before joining RCB. Maxwell also leads the Melbourne Stars in Australia’s Big Bash League. He was recently named Melbourne Stars BBL Player of the Decade. All these certainly makes him a top contender as RCB’s skipper. Dinesh Karthik The franchise shelled out Rs 5.50 crore for Karthik at the 2022 IPL Mega auction. The wicketkeeper-batter played with the Kolkata Knight Riders since 2018, leading the KKR for two and a half seasons before passing down his captaincy mid-way through the 2020 campaign. In the IPL, Karthik has played for Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Lions, and Mumbai Indians. Karthik is second on the list of the players with the most IPL caps along with Mumbai Indians’ captain Rohit Sharma, with both of them having 213 games under their belt. Karthik’s immense IPL experience across multiple teams makes him an ideal candidate for the RCB captaincy in the upcoming season. RCB, who has yet to win their first IPL title, finished third on the points tally and lost the eliminator against KKR, thus making them bow out of the tournament. The team has never won a title despite being featured in three IPL finals. Expectations are high for the new captain to lead the Karnataka side to a title win.
