MANILA, Philippines – Gabe Norwood’s outstanding performance helped the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters defeat the reigning PBA Philippine Cup champions Meralco Bolts 128-116 on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, turning back the clock with veteran leadership and ageless skill.

When his team most needed him, 40-year-old Norwood gave his best performance in a Rain or Shine jersey in recent seasons. The veteran guard stepped up and contributed in every area of the game as the Elasto Painters were badly undermanned as a result of injuries to key frontliners. In a stellar 38-minute performance, he ended with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. His highlight of the evening was a one-handed dunk in the third quarter that energized the audience and increased the E-Painters’ advantage to 82-69 with help from Jhonard Clarito.

With his most productive effort since Rain or Shine’s victory over Terrafirma in the 2021 Philippine Cup, Norwood demonstrated the continued great worth of experience, conditioning, and basketball IQ in the league. His efforts helped Rain or Shine win two in a row and move up to 2-1 in the league.

With a thin lineup, the Elasto Painters took on the Bolts. The team’s frontcourt was lacking due to the absence of big guys Beau Belga (vertigo), Keith Datu (calf injury), and rookie Caelan Tiongson (back spasms). Rain or Shine used a high-octane, small-ball strategy that valued pace and speed above size in spite of these losses.

The tactic was really successful. Rain or Shine jumped out to a head start and never let up. Gian Mamuyac and Adrian Nocum both scored 24 points, while Santi Santillan led the onslaught with 27 points and seven rebounds. Nocum was instrumental in keeping the squad moving forward as Meralco tried to rally, scoring 22 of his points in the second half.

The Bolts attempted to adapt by fielding smaller lineups, but the E-Painters’ quick-paced offense outpaced them. Meralco tried to keep up with Rain or Shine’s tempo, but was unsuccessful. Rain or Shine gained a plus-10 lead in turnover points as a result of the Bolts’ 20 turnovers and inability to establish an offensive rhythm throughout the game.

Gabe Norwood, a seasoned forward, provided stability on both ends of the court. Despite being best known for his leadership and defense, he also contributed offensively in this game, which fueled Rain or Shine’s scoring spree. In addition to showcasing his still-potent agility, his dunk in the third quarter highlighted the team’s confidence and energy.

Rain or Shine had a seven-point lead at the half (66-59), but they extended the lead with a strong run to start the third quarter. Meralco’s spirits were essentially dampened by the E-Painters’ 102-82 cushion at the end of the third, which was their biggest of the game. Rain or Shine maintained its double-digit advantage in the fourth quarter, capping off its highest-scoring game of the year.

Meralco’s record fell to 2-3 after the match, which was their third straight loss. The Bolts won the rebounding battle 55–40 and had a definite size advantage, but their poor play and turnover problems prevented them from taking advantage of the opportunity. Raymar Jose and CJ Cansino both contributed 21 points, but Bong Quinto led Meralco with 23 points. Chris Banchero scored 14 points in a limited role after recovering from an injury.

Rain or Shine’s better execution and stronger unity overcame Meralco’s attempt to play a faster game. The E-Painters’ defensive tenacity, which persisted throughout the game despite missing several rotation players, also clearly irritated the Bolts.

Its depth, readiness, and tenacity are demonstrated by Rain or Shine’s impressive performance. Due to injuries plaguing their lineup, the club adopted a team mentality, playing selflessly and relying on individuals like Norwood for leadership. Physical disadvantages may be overcome by heart, effort, and strategy, as the Elasto Painters continue to demonstrate.

Rain or Shine hopes to maintain this momentum and go further in the playoff picture as the tournament goes on. Meralco must make quick changes if they want to stop their losing streak and get back to the form that won them the championship in the previous conference.
