The Bay Area Dragons watched with interest as June Mar Fajardo and the San Miguel Beermen squared off against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last week in a tense PBA Commissioner’s Cup match.
On Sunday, the visiting club will take on the Beermen without the six-time MVP.
The throat injury that 6-foot-10 Fajardo unintentionally sustained during the game with the Elasto Painters was successfully treated via surgery the other day.
After the procedure, Fajardo was in good spirits, but he will likely miss a few games, including Sunday’s matchup with Andrew Nicholson and the Dragons.
The Rain or Shine import Steve Taylor accidentally elbowed the San Miguel star, inflicting a displaced cartilage in his larynx.
Fajardo, who had a hoarse voice after San Miguel’s PBA Commissioner’s Cup match versus Rain or Shine, went right to the hospital to get his throat examined.
Talking is now not permitted to Fajardo.
“Successful naman yung surgery niya, pero bawal pa siya magsalita. Voice rest muna,” said San Miguel physical therapist Edward Bacason.
According to Bacason, Fajardo could only communicate via sign language and writing down whatever he needed on a piece of paper.
The Cebuano big man led his team to a 113-105 victory over Rain or Shine in a game with playoff vibes that saw veteran Beau Belga disqualified for committing a flagrant foul 2 on import Diamond Stone. He finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Fajardo complained of throat pain and hoarseness shortly after the game, which prompted San Miguel management to take him directly to the hospital as first reported.
The six-time MVP, though, quickly dismissed the incident, claiming it was just another day playing basketball.
Fajardo dominated Rain or Shine in a hard game at the Philsports Arena on Sunday, winning 113-105.
He finished the game with 21 points, eight rebounds, and eight of those scores came in the fourth quarter when the Beermen defeated the valiant Elasto Painters team.
The Beermen’s first conference victory followed their 109-106 thrashing at the hands of Blackwater in their inaugural contest.
