MANILA, Philippines – One of the most dependable and devoted employees in the history of the TNT franchise, it was an accolade befitting her.
In honor of the player that spent his whole 17-year career with the Tropang Giga, the team officially retired Harvey Carey’s uniform number 4 last Wednesday.
The event took place during the PBA On Tour halftime break of the TNT-Meralco match at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Ricky Vargas, president of the PBA Board and governor of TNT, commissioner Willie Marcial, and Al S. Panlilio, the head of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), presented Carey with two framed jerseys sporting the TNT colors of yellow and blue.
At the ceremony, Carey was joined by his wife and son. Also present were members of the MVP group as well as former TNT teammates Asi Taulava, Jared Dillinger, Donbel Belano, Jay Washington, Jayson Castro, Larry Fonacier, Ranidel De Ocampo, Patrick Fran, and Troy Rosario.
Carey expressed his appreciation for the support he had from the league, the fans, and the entire TNT organization throughout his entire playing career.
Carey cried as he admitted, “I never played for the national team, I never led our squad in scoring, and I never made several All-Star teams.
I adore you guys, thank you PBA, thank you TNT, but you guys always treated me well and made me feel like an MVP.
The 6-foot-3 Sonoma State product was selected in the first round of the 2003 draft by the TNT franchise and went on to play a crucial role in the team’s success thanks to his tenacious defense and nimble offense.
He played with TNT, the only team in the PBA, for the entirety of his 17-year career, winning seven championships overall.
Carey was also a member of the All-Defensive team, the Second Mythical Team, and an All-Star game once.
In Clark, Pampanga, for the 2020 Philippine Cup bubble, he played his final season with the Tropang Giga before retiring in 2021.
After close buddy and former MVP Jimmy Alapag, Carey is the second TNT player to have his jersey retired by the organization.
