Barangay Ginebra used their never-say-die attitude to pull off a victory in the PBA On Tour for the third consecutive season.
On Friday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig, Aljon Mariano led a 12-0 run in the final three minutes to defeat Terrafirma 114-106.
With 3:31 remaining, Mariano contributed four points to a grueling run that turned a 102-106 deficit into a victory.
He scored a game-high 25 points, helping the Kings win their third straight game to improve to 4-3.
Deputy Coach Richard Del Rosario remarked that they are lucky, but will not get lucky the next time. Therefore, that’s the lesson learnt from this game. However, once more, the team managed to prevail, and AJ (Aljon Mariano) played exceptionally well.
Sidney Onwubere contributed 20 points, while Von Pessumal scored 17 points, including a corner three with 2:52 remaining that started the decisive Ginebra run. Mariano finished with a game-high 25 points, including eight in the fourth quarter, while also pulling down 11 rebounds.
Don Gumaru scored 16 points and finished the scoring in the final 25 seconds with a three-pointer.
Javi Gomez De Liano, who had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Gelo Alolino, who scored 16 points, and Ed Daquiaog, who scored 13, led Terrafirma. Ed Daquiaog’s three-point shot gave the Dyip a 106-102 lead before the Kings made their charge.
Terrafirma’s record was evened out at 4-4.
On the other hand, the team as a whole received more than just encouragement and motivation from the presence of recognized leader LA Tenorio on the Barangay Ginebra bench.
All of the players and coaches were shocked to see Tenorio during the Kings’ game.
Tenorio showed up unannounced to the game.
According to Deputy Rischard Del Rosario, the crew was taken aback by LA’s arrival, which had just arrived from Singapore for another chemotherapy session.
The team benefits greatly from his presence.
Aljon Mariano, who helped the Kings win in a thrilling come-from-behind victory of 114-106, was similarly taken aback to see Ginebra’s team captain during the second half.
Mariano claimed that Tenorio has previously assured them that he will attend the game and support the squad.
