TNT management has strongly denied rumors suggesting the team purposely lost its recent game against Barangay Ginebra to secure a more favorable playoff opponent, with the team’s head coach dismissing the accusation as “ridiculous” and completely without basis.
The controversy began shortly after TNT absorbed a crucial defeat to Ginebra in a game that carried major implications for the postseason standings. Following the loss, speculation quickly spread among fans and online commentators that TNT may have preferred facing NLEX in the playoffs instead of taking on longtime rival Meralco.
The theory gained traction on social media, where basketball followers closely analyzed TNT’s rotations, late-game decisions, and fourth-quarter struggles. Some supporters questioned whether the team intentionally eased off during critical moments to influence the playoff bracket.
TNT’s coaching staff, however, wasted little time rejecting the narrative.
“That’s complete nonsense,” the coach told reporters after a team workout. “We never step onto the court trying to lose. Anyone who believes that clearly doesn’t understand our mindset as a team.”
The coach emphasized that the organization values competitiveness and professionalism too much to manipulate results for strategic reasons. According to him, deliberately losing a game would go against everything the franchise has built over the years.
“You play to win every time,” he said. “Championship teams don’t look for shortcuts or try to avoid certain opponents. If your goal is to win a title, eventually you’ll have to beat the strongest teams anyway.”
Despite TNT’s public denial, debate surrounding the issue continued throughout the basketball community.
Observers who supported the theory pointed to several unusual stretches during the game, including defensive lapses, missed opportunities in transition, and a series of turnovers during the closing minutes. Others questioned some substitution patterns late in the contest, believing TNT lacked its usual urgency.
Still, many analysts argued there was no real evidence proving the loss had been intentional.
Several former players defended TNT and criticized the speculation, saying fans often create conspiracy theories whenever playoff scenarios become complicated.
“People read too much into these situations,” one former professional player said during a sports talk program. “Sometimes a team simply gets outplayed. That doesn’t automatically mean there was some hidden agenda.”
Ginebra also received praise for its performance, particularly its defensive intensity in the second half and ability to control the tempo late in the game. TNT struggled offensively during crucial possessions, while Ginebra capitalized on mistakes to pull away.
According to sources close to TNT, players inside the locker room were frustrated not only by the defeat but also by suggestions that they would intentionally compromise a competitive game.
“These guys are competitors,” one insider said. “They prepare every day to win. Accusing them of throwing a game is unfair to the effort they put in throughout the season.”
The playoff picture added fuel to the discussion because of the possible matchups involved. Many basketball observers consider Meralco a particularly dangerous opponent for TNT because of the teams’ familiarity with each other and Meralco’s reputation for disciplined defense. NLEX, meanwhile, is viewed by some fans as a less intimidating postseason challenge.
Even so, TNT’s coaching staff insisted there was never any internal conversation about manipulating the standings.
The coach also stressed that underestimating any playoff opponent could backfire badly.
“There are no easy teams in the playoffs,” he explained. “Anybody can beat you if you don’t come prepared and focused.”
League officials have not announced any investigation or expressed concerns regarding the integrity of the game. As of now, there is no indication from the league that TNT violated any rules or acted improperly during the matchup against Ginebra.
Inside the organization, attention has reportedly shifted toward preparing for the postseason rather than responding further to outside criticism. Sources say coaches and players discussed the rumors privately before deciding to concentrate entirely on basketball.
Fans, however, remain divided.
Some continue to believe TNT’s performance raised legitimate questions because of the playoff implications attached to the result. Others argue that the accusations disrespect both TNT and Ginebra by ignoring the natural unpredictability of high-pressure games.
Regardless of public opinion, TNT officials remain firm in their position that the loss was genuine and not part of any larger strategy.
“At the end of the day, we got beaten by a good basketball team,” the coach said. “That happens in sports. But saying we lost on purpose? That’s simply not true.”
With the playoffs approaching, TNT now faces the challenge of blocking out distractions and proving on the court that its focus remains exactly where it has always been competing for a championship.
