In the PBA Governors’ Cup on Thursday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium, San Miguel defeated Rain or Shine 113–112, thanks to a shot from June Mar Fajardo that was among the most unlikely in league history.
With three seconds remaining in a thrilling game, Felix Lemetti was fouling the Beermen and about to make a four-point shot when Fajardo made a buzzer-beating jumper to win it for San Miguel.
Rain or Shine’s Fil-Swedish rookie quietly made the four free throws, which gave the Elastopainters the lead, 112-111.
Rain or Shine’s flawless 4-0 start to the season and SMB’s own two-game slump came to an end when San Miguel managed to get the ball to Fajardo with three seconds remaining and no timeouts remaining. Fajardo made a gentle roll on his jumper from just over the free-throw line at the buzzer.
The game-winning basket completed another outstanding double-double from Fajardo, who finished with 27 points and 21 rebounds for the Beermen, who finished Group B’s first round of eliminations with a 3-2 win-loss record.
With 41 points, including a jumper that gave San Miguel a 109-105 lead, Jordan Adams continued to dominate for the team.
Coach Jorge Gallent of San Miguel stated that he was not taken aback by the battle that Rain or Shine put up until the very end.
Late in the third quarter, Fajardo made back-to-back baskets from the shaded lane to give San Miguel its biggest lead at 86-74. However, Keith Datu’s jumper with 1:49 left in the game matched the score at 105.
Lemetti made a three-pointer in the closing minute of the game to keep the score close after Fajardo and Adams responded with two straight shots.
Including the four free throws he received after drawing a foul against Chris Ross, Lemetti finished with a total of 28 points. For Rain or Shine, Aaron Fuller recorded 24 points and 18 rebounds in place of freshman Caelan Tiongson, who was sidelined by illness.
