PBA: Scotty Hopson will always have the guts to take the final shot, injury or not while, Coach Cardel refuses to give up, Dyip, despite yet another setback

Of all the four-point game-winning shots he has made in his PBA career, Scotty Hopson may find the most difficult to make than the one he quietly made on Saturday.

With 2.5 seconds remaining, the Converge immigrant made history by blocking the four from the right wing, helping the FiberXers defeat Terrafirma 100-99.

The shot bore a striking resemblance to the one he made on August 27, 2018, when he similarly sank the crucial four from the right side to give Converge a 96-95 win over TNT.

Converge’s playoff chances were greatly bolstered by the win, which moved them up to 4-4 in Group A, one game behind NorthPort (3-5). In each of the two groups, the top four teams advance to the quarterfinals. But despite having an injury, 35-year-old Hopson made the shot for this game-winning basket.

“Coach Charles (Tiu) drew up the play for me. They all trust me to get in those positions to make a shot or at least take a shot. I was confident from the jump, obviously. As soon as we called the play, I kinda just got in character, got in my mood and blocked everything out.” said Hopson.

Hopson said that the play was set up, exactly like in the TNT, for him to make a fourth-point winner with 6.6 seconds remaining with Converge down, 99-96.

Despite his health issues, Hopson’s game-winning shot was praised by Converge coach Franco Atienza.

Hopson expressed gratitude for the team’s ability to overcome a 14-point deficit and pull off a second consecutive come-from-behind victory.

“It was actually an ugly game for us. We really didn’t play well offensively. I’m happy we got the win and I’m happy I had another chance to make a four-point shot,” Hopson remarked.

The Dyip had one more opportunity to turn the tide, but Antonio Hester’s long-range jumper at the buzzer missed the front part of the rim, handing the squad its eighth consecutive defeat in the season-opening conference.

“Sayang nasa amin na, lamang na kami,” said the Dyip mentor. “Hindi pa rin bumagsak. Talagang ganun siguro.”

The team was clearly frustrated, according to coach Johnedel Cardel, but they had no choice but to keep going.

The fact that this loss occurred just two days after a similar experience in a 99-98 loss to the Magnolia Hotshots, however, made it much more devastating.

The Terrafirma coach emphasized that rather than defeating Converge with a game-winning shot from the 27-foot arc, the players were told to commit a foul and allow them to decide the outcome from the free throw line.

He was aware of the undermanned nature of the Dyip throughout the entire game, though.

With two games left in the group stage, Terrafirma will face TNT, the leader of Group A, and Meralco, so they won’t be easy ones.

Cardel also stated that the Dyip will not give up until they eventually achieved that elusive victory.
