It is now the time of the NCAA guys to enter the PBA rookie draft.
Jielo Razon and Peter Alfaro have filed applications for the July 14 proceedings, which have been dominated by their UAAP counterparts thus far.
Alfaro just finished a championship season with the San Beda Red Lions, a team that beat top-seeded Mapua in their best-of-three title series. Alfaro was a major contributor to that victory.
Junnie Navarro, owner of the Zamboanga Valientes team, verified Alfaro’s availability for the draft. Alfaro is one of the stars of the Valientes team competing in The Asian Tournament right now.
Razon, on the other hand, was the team’s sparkplug when University of Perpetual Help Altas just missed making it to the NCAA Season 99 Final Four.
Former Gilas player and Adamson standout Jerom Lastimosa has joined Alfaro and Razon as the most recent players to submit an application for the draft.
The bulk of candidates on the draft list thus far have been UAAP players, and they will be on the final office hours of July 4.
A number of students have already declared for the draft: Paul Garcia from Ateneo; Evan Nelle, Ben Philips, Francis Escandor, and DJ Mitchell from La Salle; CJ Cansino and CJ Catapusan from University of the Philippines; and Calvin Payawal from University of the East.
Among the draft applicants is Biola University’s Fil-Am Caelan Tiongson.
Despite playing with TNT Tropang Giga during the PBA On Tour alongside fellow Red Lions Clifford Jopia, Damie Cuntapay, and JV Gallego, Alfaro decided not to apply in the previous year’s draft.
Jopia and Cuntapay submitted draft applications, and Blackwater and Terrafirma, respectively, selected them. The 6-foot-8 Jopia inked a contract with the Bossing, while Cuntapay, a 6-foot-5 power forward with long-range ability, joined Northport.
However, Alfaro, a native of Zamboanga, played for the Valientes to maintain his peak playing form.
The San Beda mainstay is the starting point guard for Zamboanga, a team that narrowly lost to Pola Pilipinas in the Leg 3 championship of the young regional competition.
