Converge may have found a way to get past Rain or Shine in their second quarterfinal meeting, but head coach Dennis Pineda knows that the real challenge could come in the next game.
The FiberXers managed to bring their best-of-five PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series back to level terms after surviving a tough 130-125 encounter against the Elasto Painters. However, Pineda is not allowing the victory to become a reason for his players to ease up.
Having faced Yeng Guiao’s teams and understanding the veteran coach’s competitive approach, Pineda expects Rain or Shine to return with a different strategy. He knows Guiao is unlikely to let another defeat pass without making the necessary adjustments.
That makes the upcoming matchup particularly important for Converge, which is hoping to secure a place in the semifinals for the first time in franchise history.
Pineda understands that defeating Rain or Shine once is only part of the job. The FiberXers must be prepared for a more aggressive opponent, especially with Guiao expected to find ways to address the weaknesses exposed in Game 2.
The first two meetings have already shown how unpredictable the matchup can be.
Rain or Shine took the opening game, 124-120, after pulling off an impressive comeback from a 21-point deficit. The Elasto Painters demonstrated their ability to change the complexion of a game through relentless pressure and timely scoring, leaving Converge with another painful reminder of how quickly momentum can shift.
The FiberXers responded in the second encounter, but they had to work hard until the final minutes to prevent another collapse.
Converge initially appeared to have control after building a 14-point halftime advantage, leading 70-56. Rain or Shine, however, refused to back down and gradually worked its way back into contention.
By the end of the third quarter, the Elasto Painters had trimmed the deficit to just two points, setting up a tense final period.
The pressure intensified when Rain or Shine managed to pull even at 120-all with a little over three minutes remaining. At that point, Converge needed to show composure and execute its plays rather than allow its opponents to dictate the closing stretch.
The FiberXers eventually found the answers, making important baskets and converting crucial opportunities at the free-throw line to preserve their advantage.
Cameron Clark paced Converge with 22 points, while Juan Gomez de Liaño contributed 20 points, seven rebounds and eight assists. Alec Stockton added 18 points, providing another important scoring option for the FiberXers.
Mikey Williams also made his presence felt during the closing minutes, connecting on a timely three-pointer that helped Converge create some breathing room. Justin Arana and Calvin Abueva also provided valuable support as the team fought to protect its lead.
Rain or Shine had several players deliver impressive numbers despite the loss. Adrian Nocum recorded 22 points and 18 assists, while import Aaron Fuller finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Jhonard Clarito also chipped in 22 points.
Those performances should give Guiao plenty to consider as he prepares his team for the next encounter.
The Elasto Painters have already shown that they can produce a strong offensive response, even when facing a significant disadvantage. Their ability to recover from a double-digit deficit in the opening game is proof that Converge cannot afford to become distracted or complacent.
For Pineda, the challenge goes beyond simply preparing for another basketball game. He must ensure that his players understand the importance of maintaining their concentration throughout all four quarters.
Converge cannot depend entirely on its scoring ability. It must also improve its defensive execution, take better care of the basketball and find ways to control the pace when Rain or Shine begins applying pressure.
The FiberXers will also need to remain patient. Guiao’s teams are known for their physical approach and willingness to compete, making it important for Converge to avoid unnecessary mistakes and emotional decisions.
With the series now tied at one game apiece, neither side has established a decisive advantage. Every remaining game carries greater importance, particularly for a Converge squad chasing a milestone that would represent a major achievement for the franchise.
Pineda has reason to be pleased with his team’s response after losing the opener, but he knows that one victory will not be enough to accomplish their ultimate goal.
Guiao has spent years proving his ability to make adjustments and bring out the best in his players during difficult situations. Pineda expects nothing less from the veteran tactician.
The FiberXers have managed to avoid falling into a 0-2 hole. Now, they must show that they can handle the next challenge.
For Converge, the message is simple: enjoy the victory, learn from the mistakes and prepare for an even tougher battle. Against a coach like Guiao, getting comfortable after one win could prove costly.
