LOS ANGELES, California – According to the league’s announcement on Tuesday, Orlando Magic forward Paolo Banchero easily won the award for NBA Rookie of the Year.

Banchero was awarded the Wilt Chamberlain Trophy after receiving 98 out of the 100 first-place votes from a group of sportswriters and broadcasters.

Following his selection by the Magic as the first overall pick in the 2022 draft, Banchero averaged 20 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists across 72 games (all starts). He hit 85 three-pointers, had 60 steals, and blocked 39 shots.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s Jalen Williams, who came in second with 241 points, was outscored by Banchero, 20, who collected 494 total points. The other two first-place votes went to Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler (114), who finished third.

The third Orlando athlete to get the honor is Banchero, who played college basketball for Duke. The other two are Mike Miller (2001) and Shaquille O’Neal (1993). Miller represents Banchero.

Banchero finished second among Magic rookies with six 30-point performances, trailing only O’Neal’s ten.

In 75 games (62 starts), Santa Clara’s Williams, the 12th overall choice, averaged 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

With 173 shot blocks, or a 2.3 average, Kessler, the 22nd overall pick from Auburn, was a formidable defender. Over the course of 74 games (40 starts), he averaged 9.2 points and 8.4 rebounds. Rudy Gobert, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, was traded to the Jazz by the Minnesota Timberwolves two weeks after the draft, bringing him to the Jazz.

On draft night, Kessler was traded from Memphis to Minnesota after being selected by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Keegan Murray (21) of the Sacramento Kings was in fifth place, followed by Benedict Mathurin (27) of the Indiana Pacers. The Detroit Pistons’ Jaden Ivey (3) also earned votes. Murray made 206 3-pointers as a rookie, an NBA record.
