3 Times it happened. Meager still. Every night, it feels like there is a historic NBA game. Giannis Antetokounmpo became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to have back-to-back 40-20 games, Luka Doncic recorded the first triple-double in NBA history with 60 points and 20 rebounds, and now on Monday night, Donovan Mitchell of Cleveland scores 71 points in an overtime victory vs Chicago.

The total number of field goals Mitchell needed to make in order to score his 71 points was the least number of attempts needed by any player with 63 or more points in history. The two previous players to reach 70 points, Chamberlain in 1963 and Thompson in 1978, needed a combined 38 shots.

A ground-breaking box office hit. 99. the total number of points, including assists, Mitchell scored on Monday. Wilt Chamberlain is the only player in history to have produced more points than that; during his 100-point effort in 1962, he produced 104 total points with two assists.

Closer look at recent record breaking Mitchell match

One day after defeating the Bulls by one point in Chicago, the Cavaliers welcomed the Bulls to Cleveland and triumphed 145-134 in overtime courtesy to a record-setting effort by Donovan Mitchell.

The Bulls seized control of both the offense and the defense in the first half of the game. The Bulls played at a quick pace while the Cavs struggled to make shots. They were able to have an 18-point lead at the break.

At the conclusion of the second quarter, Donovan Mitchell had just 16 points. But “Spida” Mitchell went off as soon as the third quarter got underway.

After eight minutes, Mitchell didn’t miss many opportunities. “Spida” kept his rhythm while executing jump shots, three-pointers, and free throws. He shifted the game back in the Cavs’ favor by eliminating the Bulls’ advantage, giving his team more structure, and creating opportunities for quality shots.

Mitchell exploded for 24 points in the third period alone.

Mitchell was of the opinion that the game might not have been won in the fourth. Both sides’ play accelerated substantially as the score became closer. Throughout the quarter, Mitchell was unstoppable, making back-to-back jumpers and three-pointers in addition to giving out assists to Cedi Osman, Kevin Love, and Jarrett Allen.
