Jalen Brunson assists the Knicks in victory over the Cavs

The visiting New York Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 101-97 in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference quarterfinal series on Saturday night thanks to 21 points from Jalen Brunson, who also had 21 points in the second half.

After blowing a lead of ten in the fourth quarter, the Knicks were forced to come back. With 27 total points, Brunson led the squad.

For the fifth-seeded Knicks, who are in the playoffs for the second time in three years, Josh Hart (17 points, 10 rebounds) recorded a double-double off the bench and hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining. With a sprained left ankle that kept him out of the final five games of the regular season, Julius Randle also finished with a double-double (19 points, 10 rebounds).

The fourth-seeded Cavaliers, who are in the postseason for the first time since 1998 without LeBron James, were led by Donovan Mitchell’s 38 points and eight assists. Darius Garland scored 17 points, while Jarrett Allen had a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Brunson was only able to score six points in the first nine minutes of the half after accumulating three early fouls. However, the Knicks only had to overcome three two-point deficits before extending their lead to as much as 12. They then went into halftime with a 50-45 advantage.

The Cavaliers didn’t come any closer than six points until they went on a 9-0 run with 2:12 left in the fourth and seized the lead at 93 to 92 on Allen’s putback.

Following a timeout, Hart made a 26-footer, and Mitchell missed a 3-point attempt. After then, Brunson made a step back from the free-throw line to increase the Knicks’ advantage to 97 to 93.

Isaiah Hartenstein tapped out the rebound after Hart missed a jump shot in response, and Brunson made a floater to give New York a 99 to 95 lead. Mitchell then made a pair of free throws to end the period.

With 31.6 seconds left, Allen made a slam following a Cavaliers timeout.

Quentin Grimes sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 4.3 seconds left after Brunson missed a long jumper. Randle had previously collected the rebound and threw the ball out to Grimes.
