In June, Brown agreed to a three-year contract extension. According to Shams Charania of ESPN, the Sacramento Kings fired head coach Mike Brown on Friday. An interesting turn of events for the team that performed quite okay with Brown.
Sacramento has dropped 12 of their last 17 games and is now on a five-game losing streak. The Kings are ranked 12th in the Western Conference and bottom in the Pacific Division with a record of 13–18.
Mike Brown only had two complete seasons as the Sacramento Kings’ coach.
According to some sources, assistant coach Doug Christie will be chosen as temporary coach. On Saturday, the club will play the Los Angeles Lakers to start the season.
A four-point play in the closing seconds of Thursday night’s game cost the Kings a one-point defeat to the 14–17 Detroit Pistons. Just before the team took off for Los Angeles on Saturday night to play the Lakers, Brown was fired for managing practice and speaking with the media, according to ABC10’s Matt George.
The Sacramento Kings lost to the 14–17 Detroit Pistons by a slim margin of one point on Thursday night, giving up a four-point play in the closing seconds of play. The squad struggled to finish a contest that they could have won, therefore the result was a huge disappointment.
The loss’s aftermath took a surprising turn, according to Matt George of ABC10. Not long after leading practice and speaking to the media, head coach Mike Brown was relieved of his responsibilities. The team was about to take a plane to Los Angeles for their Saturday night game against the Lakers when the decision was made.
Brown recognized the highs and lows of his time in the league as he reflected on the difficulties he had encountered during his career. He was appreciative of the chances he had been given, which included working with coaches and players who had won championships. Despite the challenging times, Brown brought attention to the intense scrutiny that even the most successful basketball players must endure when things get tough.
Brown’s exit was a sea change for the Kings and raised concerns about the team’s future leadership and direction. The decision highlighted the high standards and pressures that come with playing professional basketball as the team regrouped before their game against the Lakers.
In 2023, Brown, 54, won Coach of the Year for the second time after guiding the Kings from a 30-win campaign to a 48-34 record and Pacific Division championship. He agreed to a three-year contract extension with the squad in June, which would last through the 2026–2027 campaign.
The Kings and Brown had argued over the average yearly compensation in a new contract prior to agreeing to the extension, and it looked like he could be finishing out his contract after this season. At $8.5 million annually, his final contract placed him in the top eight head-coaching salaries in the league. He had one first-round playoff series and a 107–88 record when he left Sacramento.
Brown had previously been the head coach of the Lakers (2011–12) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2005–10). He has a 454–304 record overall.
Before taking his first head coaching job, Brown spent eight seasons as an assistant for the Golden State Warriors, Indiana Pacers, San Antonio Spurs, and Washington Wizards. He worked for the Spurs on one NBA championship team and the Warriors on three others.
For the 2021–22 season, Christie became an assistant under Alvin Gentry, who was the head coach of the Kings. He had been an analyst on the team’s television broadcasts for the previous three seasons. During his 15 NBA seasons, Christie spent five of them seasons with the Kings. The Lakers, New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Clippers were among the teams he played for.
