MANILA, Philippines – On Wednesday night at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig, Hong Kong Eastern defeated Phoenix Super LPG 102-87, making a statement in their PBA Commissioner’s Cup debut. The squad, which is known for playing mostly at home, displayed poise and control in their first international game, which was reminiscent of the Bay Area Dragons’ triumphant 2022 guest team debut.
PBA veteran Cameron Clark led the charge for Hong Kong Eastern, and his strong play served as the foundation for the team’s offensive and defensive tactics. The tone was established by Clark’s leadership on the floor, and the victory was secured by the strong play of his local teammates, Hayden Blankley and Kobey Lam.
The team led by coach Mensur Bajramovic took advantage of a crucial third quarter to outscore Phoenix by 15 points and maintain that lead until the closing frame. For Hong Kong Eastern, who went into the tournament hoping to recover from a dismal 1-9 record in their previous PBA appearance, this performance was a major turning point.
Phoenix found it difficult to match their opponents’ intensity and skill, even with the help of import Donovan Smith and important players like Jason Perkins and Sean Manganti. As they prepare for their upcoming game, the defeat brought to light areas that need work.
