Yeng Guiao will continue calling the shots for Rain or Shine for the foreseeable future after the veteran mentor agreed to a contract extension that will keep him with the Elasto Painters until 2030.

The long-term agreement gives Guiao additional security with a franchise where he has already built a significant part of his coaching legacy. It also provides Rain or Shine with continuity as the organization works to develop its younger players while remaining competitive in the PBA.

Guiao’s relationship with Rain or Shine dates back to 2011, when he first took charge of the franchise. His initial stint lasted until 2016 and produced two championships, including the 2012 Governors’ Cup and the 2016 Commissioner’s Cup.

After leaving Rain or Shine, Guiao spent several seasons with the NLEX Road Warriors before eventually returning to the Elasto Painters in 2022.

His second stint has produced a different challenge.

Rather than relying primarily on an established veteran core, Guiao has been tasked with helping Rain or Shine develop younger players and maintain its competitiveness while its roster continues to evolve.

The results have kept the team in the postseason conversation.

Rain or Shine has reached the semifinals in five of its last six conferences, establishing itself as a regular contender even as the franchise continues to search for another championship.

That sustained run has given the organization reason to maintain its partnership with Guiao.

The veteran coach has also played an important role in giving younger players meaningful opportunities. Players such as Adrian Nocum and Jhonard Clarito have emerged as significant pieces of the Rain or Shine rotation, contributing to the team’s changing identity.

Nocum, in particular, has attracted attention beyond his club duties after becoming part of the pool being considered for the Philippine men’s basketball team at the Asian Games.

His development is representative of what Rain or Shine has attempted to accomplish under Guiao: remain competitive while giving its younger talents the room to grow.

The coach’s ability to adjust has also been tested by changes within the roster.

Rain or Shine recently dealt Gian Mamuyac to Phoenix, ending the former team captain’s stint with the Elasto Painters. Mamuyac had been an important contributor during the franchise’s recent playoff appearances, making his departure another significant change for Guiao and his coaching staff.

Rather than allowing such moves to derail the team’s direction, Rain or Shine will now have an extended period to continue building around the players who remain.

The new contract also comes as Guiao enters another important stage of his coaching career.

A seven-time PBA champion, Guiao has established himself as one of the league’s most experienced coaches. His teams have traditionally been known for their intensity and competitiveness, traits that have remained visible in Rain or Shine’s recent campaigns.

The Elasto Painters’ current goal, however, extends beyond simply making the playoffs.

Their recent string of semifinal appearances has demonstrated their ability to compete deep into conferences, but another championship remains the major prize for the organization.

Rain or Shine last won a PBA title under Guiao in 2016. Nearly a decade later, the franchise is once again entrusting him with the task of guiding a developing roster toward another championship opportunity.

The extension through 2030 gives both coach and team time to pursue that objective.

For Guiao, it means the opportunity to continue shaping a group that contains several young players who are still establishing themselves in the league.

For Rain or Shine, it means avoiding another coaching transition while the franchise works on the next phase of its roster development.

The decision also reflects the value of familiarity. Guiao already understands the organization’s culture and expectations, while the franchise is familiar with his coaching methods and his approach to player development.

That continuity could prove important as the Elasto Painters navigate future roster changes and increasingly competitive PBA seasons.

Guiao’s return to Rain or Shine in 2022 revived a partnership that had already delivered championships. His new deal now ensures that the relationship will continue well into the next decade.

The challenge will be turning the team’s consistency into another title.

With the coach secured through 2030, Rain or Shine can focus its attention on building its roster, developing its young core and finding the pieces necessary to make another deep postseason run.

For a franchise that has remained competitive without yet adding another championship to its recent résumé, the coming years will provide Guiao with another opportunity to add to his already decorated coaching career.

And this time, he will have several seasons ahead of him to finish the job with the Elasto Painters.
