Tim Cone knows better than to celebrate too early, especially when the opponent standing in front of Barangay Ginebra is a team with the championship experience of the San Miguel Beermen.

Although the Gin Kings have taken a commanding 2-0 lead in their PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series, Cone is reminding his players that the job remains unfinished. With a semifinal berth within reach, the veteran coach wants Ginebra to stay focused and avoid giving the Beermen an opportunity to turn the matchup around.

Ginebra has looked impressive through the opening two games, controlling the series with its balanced offense, defensive pressure and contributions from several players. However, Cone understands that San Miguel’s current situation could make the Beermen even more dangerous.

A team facing elimination has very little reason to hold anything back. For a franchise that has collected numerous championships, being pushed to the edge is not something it will accept without a fight.

That is precisely why Cone is refusing to allow his players to become comfortable.

The Ginebra mentor knows that a two-game advantage can disappear if the team loses concentration. He wants the Gin Kings to approach their next assignment with the same discipline they displayed in the first two meetings instead of assuming that another victory will come easily.

San Miguel’s reputation alone is enough to demand respect. The Beermen have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to compete under pressure, and their experienced roster includes players who understand what it takes to survive difficult playoff situations.

Cone is particularly aware of how quickly a series can change once a struggling team finds its rhythm. One strong performance from San Miguel could restore its confidence and place additional pressure on Ginebra.

The Gin Kings, therefore, cannot afford to give their opponents that opportunity.

Much of Ginebra’s success has come from its ability to get contributions from different players. Import Jordan Murphy has been an important part of the team’s offensive attack, providing scoring, rebounding and playmaking whenever needed.

Murphy was especially effective in the second game, finishing with 33 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. His performance created problems for San Miguel’s defense and allowed his teammates to benefit from the attention he attracted.

RJ Abarrientos also played a major role, contributing 22 points, while Stephen Holt added 19. Their offensive production gave Ginebra multiple scoring options and prevented the Beermen from concentrating their defensive efforts on just one player.

The supporting cast has also played its part. Scottie Thompson’s all-around contributions, combined with the presence of Japeth Aguilar and Isaac Go, have helped Ginebra maintain its competitive edge in different areas of the game.

That balance has made the Gin Kings difficult to contain. They have shown that they can generate offense through individual efforts while remaining effective as a collective unit.

San Miguel, meanwhile, needs to find answers before its campaign comes to an end. The Beermen have struggled to match Ginebra’s intensity, particularly when the Kings begin building momentum.

June Mar Fajardo and his teammates will need to deliver a more consistent performance if they want to extend the series. Better defensive coverage, fewer costly mistakes and improved offensive execution will be essential.

The Beermen also need to rediscover their confidence. Their championship experience gives them a reason to believe they can still compete, but they must translate that experience into a stronger performance on the floor.

For Ginebra, the challenge is different. The team must resist the temptation to think about the semifinals before completing its assignment against San Miguel.

Cone has spent years competing in high-pressure playoff situations, and he understands that the most dangerous mistake a team can make is underestimating an opponent that has nothing left to lose.

The Gin Kings are in an excellent position, but they still need one more victory to officially close out the matchup. Their focus must remain on execution rather than the possibility of celebrating an early series victory.

With San Miguel fighting to keep its season alive, Ginebra should expect a more determined opponent in the next encounter.

Cone’s message serves as a reminder that playoff success requires consistency from beginning to end. The Gin Kings have done their part in establishing the advantage, but they cannot afford to take their foot off the gas.

For now, the objective remains straightforward: stay aggressive, remain disciplined and finish the job.

Ginebra may be just one win away from the semifinals, but Cone knows that San Miguel is far too experienced to be counted out prematurely.
