Barangay Ginebra San Miguel delivered a much-needed boost to its playoff campaign after dominating the Phoenix Fuel Masters, 106-89, in a wire-to-wire victory that strengthened the Gin Kings’ hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup.
Playing with urgency, Ginebra established control early and never surrendered the lead, turning what began as a competitive matchup into a convincing 17-point triumph. The victory improved the Gin Kings’ record to 4-5, keeping them in the hunt for a postseason berth as the elimination round entered its decisive stage.
Scottie Thompson spearheaded the winning effort with an impressive all-around display, while import Jordan Murphy provided another major offensive contribution. Their performances helped Ginebra dictate the tempo and prevent Phoenix from building enough momentum to threaten the result.
For a team fighting to extend its season, the victory was more than another addition to the win column. It demonstrated that the Gin Kings could deliver a complete performance when the pressure was mounting.
Thompson Sets the Tone
Thompson once again showed why his contributions extend well beyond scoring, finishing with 29 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks.
The veteran guard made his presence felt on both ends of the floor, helping Ginebra maintain offensive pressure while disrupting Phoenix’s attempts to establish a consistent rhythm. His ability to contribute in several areas allowed the Gin Kings to remain effective even when the Fuel Masters tried to respond.
Thompson’s performance also provided the leadership Ginebra needed in a game carrying important implications for its playoff aspirations. Rather than allowing the contest to become a prolonged struggle, he helped his team capitalize on opportunities and maintain its advantage.
Murphy supplied another major weapon, tallying 28 points and 13 rebounds. His production gave Ginebra a dependable scoring option and helped the team control the battle inside.
Japeth Aguilar and Jeremiah Gray chipped in 12 points apiece, further strengthening the Gin Kings’ offensive attack. With several players contributing meaningful numbers, Phoenix faced the difficult task of containing multiple threats rather than concentrating exclusively on Thompson or Murphy.
That collective effort became one of Ginebra’s biggest advantages as the game progressed.
Second Quarter Proves Decisive
Phoenix initially managed to keep the contest close, trailing by only two points, 38-36, after the opening quarter.
The Fuel Masters appeared capable of challenging Ginebra during the early exchanges, but the second period completely changed the complexion of the matchup.
The Gin Kings found greater consistency on offense and tightened their grip on the game, outscoring Phoenix to build a commanding 65-45 halftime advantage.
The 20-point cushion placed Ginebra in a favorable position and forced Phoenix to spend the remainder of the contest attempting to recover lost ground.
Instead of easing off after the break, the Gin Kings continued to apply pressure. Their lead expanded to 86-60 entering the final quarter, leaving Phoenix with a steep challenge and limited time to mount a comeback.
Ginebra’s ability to sustain its advantage was particularly important. Teams protecting a substantial lead can sometimes become careless or allow opponents to regain confidence, but the Gin Kings maintained enough control to prevent Phoenix from turning the game into a close finish.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, Ginebra had secured a convincing victory without ever falling behind.
Phoenix Unable to Match Ginebra’s Firepower
Marcellus Earlington paced Phoenix with 22 points and nine rebounds, doing his best to keep the Fuel Masters competitive against a Ginebra team that found its rhythm early.
Ricci Rivero and Kai Ballungay added 10 points each, but Phoenix could not generate enough consistent offense to overcome the damage inflicted during the second and third quarters.
The defeat dropped Phoenix to 5-4, while Ginebra moved to 4-5. Although the Fuel Masters remained ahead of the Gin Kings in the standings, the result highlighted the importance of maintaining consistency throughout the full 48 minutes.
Phoenix showed it could compete during the opening period, but its inability to contain Ginebra’s subsequent surge proved costly.
Playoff Hopes Remain Alive
For Ginebra, the victory arrived at a crucial point in its campaign. With little room for error, every remaining game carries added importance as the team attempts to secure a place in the next stage of the competition.
The win also provides a confidence boost for a roster accustomed to competing under pressure. Thompson’s leadership, Murphy’s production, and the supporting contributions from the rest of the lineup offer encouraging signs heading into the team’s final elimination-round assignment against Blackwater.
However, the Gin Kings cannot afford to become complacent. Their 4-5 record means the work is not finished, and they must continue producing strong performances to keep their postseason ambitions on track.
Against Phoenix, Ginebra showed what it can accomplish when its offense clicks and its defense limits the opposition’s opportunities.
The challenge now is to reproduce that formula when the stakes rise even higher.
Sunday’s performance gave the Gin Kings a timely victory, renewed belief, and a valuable opportunity to keep their playoff hopes alive. With the elimination round nearing its conclusion, Ginebra has given itself another chance to fight for a place among the teams advancing to the quarterfinals.
