The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters turned a difficult night into a memorable playoff victory, overcoming a 21-point deficit to defeat the Converge FiberXers, 124-120, and seize the opening game of their PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup quarterfinal series.
What initially looked like a comfortable night for Converge quickly developed into a frustrating collapse as Rain or Shine found its offensive rhythm after halftime. The Elasto Painters completely changed the complexion of the contest, using a remarkable third-quarter explosion and timely baskets down the stretch to escape with the victory.
The result gave Rain or Shine a 1-0 advantage in the best-of-five series, putting the team halfway toward the three wins needed to advance to the semifinals. More importantly, the comeback demonstrated the team’s ability to remain competitive even when the odds appeared to be against it.
Converge seemed to have everything working during the opening half. The FiberXers attacked effectively, found opportunities to score and gradually created separation from an Elasto Painters squad struggling to establish defensive consistency.
Their lead eventually grew to 21 points, leaving Rain or Shine facing a substantial challenge heading into the second half. Converge maintained a 68-55 advantage at the break, giving the impression that it had established control over the series opener.
But the game changed dramatically once the teams returned to the floor.
Rain or Shine began playing with greater urgency, moving the ball more effectively and finding opportunities that had been difficult to create earlier. The Elasto Painters increased their offensive pressure and forced Converge to work harder defensively, gradually chipping away at the sizeable deficit.
Instead of allowing the game to slip away, Rain or Shine continued to attack. Each successful possession helped restore the team’s confidence, while Converge found itself under increasing pressure to protect its lead.
Rookie Deo Cuajao emerged as an important contributor during the turnaround. His perimeter shooting gave Rain or Shine a much-needed scoring boost, helping the team close the gap and build momentum. Caelan Tiongson also provided valuable support as the Elasto Painters began to take advantage of their improved offensive execution.
The third quarter ultimately became the defining stretch of the game. Rain or Shine poured in 42 points, transforming a double-digit disadvantage into a tightly contested battle.
The comeback reached a major turning point when Cuajao connected from beyond the arc to put the Elasto Painters ahead, 82-81. It was their first lead of the contest and a clear indication that the momentum had shifted.
Rain or Shine carried a slim 97-96 advantage into the final period, setting the stage for a tense fourth quarter in which neither side could afford costly mistakes.
That burst gave Rain or Shine breathing room at a critical moment. Although Converge continued fighting, the FiberXers could not produce a sustained response strong enough to reverse the outcome.
Fuller and Tiongson then converted their free throws in the closing seconds, allowing the Elasto Painters to protect their advantage and complete the four-point victory.
The import delivered 33 points and 14 rebounds, providing the interior scoring and rebounding presence that Rain or Shine needed to withstand Converge’s attempts to regain control.
Adrian Nocum also delivered an impressive performance, recording 26 points and nine assists. His combination of scoring and playmaking helped keep the offense productive during the game’s most important possessions.
Tiongson finished with 17 points, while Cuajao added 15, highlighting the importance of contributions from several players rather than depending on one individual to complete the comeback.
Converge still had opportunities to salvage the game. Cameron Clark led the FiberXers with 28 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Arana contributed 21 points. However, the team’s inability to preserve its early advantage proved costly.
With the score tied at 103, Nocum made a difficult basket that helped Rain or Shine launch a crucial 9-3 run. Fuller added a hook shot during the decisive sequence, extending the Elasto Painters’ lead to 112-106 with slightly more than five minutes remaining.
For Rain or Shine, the win reflected the value of persistence and the ability to make adjustments when a game begins to unravel. Its second-half performance showed how quickly momentum can change when a team finds the right combination of execution, confidence and timely scoring.
Converge, meanwhile, must address how its commanding lead disappeared. Improving its defensive response and maintaining concentration throughout the game will be essential if the FiberXers hope to even the series.
The opening victory gives Rain or Shine a valuable head start, but the team cannot afford to assume that the next meeting will follow the same pattern. Converge has the opportunity to regroup, study the comeback and make the necessary corrections.
For now, the Elasto Painters can celebrate a victory earned through determination rather than a comfortable start. They overcame a 21-point hole, delivered a huge third quarter and executed when the game was on the line.
Rain or Shine has taken the first step toward the semifinals. After such a dramatic opening win, the challenge will be sustaining that intensity as the battle with Converge continues.
