In a crucial matchup between two proud teams with a winning history, Simon Enciso isn’t fussing over the clutch three he made for TNT against his old team, San Miguel Beer, on Sunday night.
At the Ynares Center, Enciso’s game-winning three-pointer in the closing seconds of a tense game helped the Tropang 5G defeat the Beermen 89-84, their first victory in the PBA Philippine Cup.
With 49 seconds remaining, the veteran Fil-Am made the crucial basket off a Rey Nambatac pass as the Beermen were closing the gap on the Tropang 5G.
After completing a three-point basket, Enciso would typically shoot an imagined arrow into the air as part of his routine.
However, he quickly clarified that it wasn’t intended as a jab at his former squad or to be spiteful toward the Beermen.
“It was a game with a lot of emotions, it was a big shot. (But) The celebration does not mean anything else. I’ve done that a lot for San Miguel, too,” Enciso remarked.
“It wasn’t a statement, it’s just me enjoying the moment, enjoying being there on the floor, enjoying competing. I love this game.”
After the Tropang 5G lost their first three games in the season-ending conference, Enciso helped them finally win on the leaderboard with 13 points, four assists, two rebounds, and three 3-pointers.
Enciso was signed by TNT because the squad needed an outside shooter, according to coach Chot Reyes.
After spending three seasons and winning two titles with San Miguel, Enciso was selected as an unrestricted free agent and signed with the Tropang 5G.
For the first time since joining TNT, he enjoyed playing against his old teammates.
“It’s always fun competing against them (Beermen). We always compete at practice. Although I didn’t get a lot of minutes, but there’s a lot of tough scrimmages in our practice, a lot of ‘shit’ talking,” He smiled broadly as he recalled.
He reiterated that it wasn’t all about him when he hit that big three.
