San Miguel Beermen received an encouraging reminder of their championship past when former guard Alex Cabagnot visited the team during a difficult stretch in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.

With their playoff campaign threatened after consecutive losses to Barangay Ginebra, the Beermen welcomed the presence of a familiar figure whose experience and connection to the franchise carried special meaning.

Cabagnot’s visit came at a time when San Miguel needed more than tactical adjustments. The team was searching for confidence, composure and the determination to respond after falling behind in its best-of-five quarterfinal series.

For June Mar Fajardo, seeing the former teammate around the team provided an important emotional boost.

Cabagnot was part of the San Miguel squad that established itself as one of the most dominant teams in the league, helping build a winning culture through years of championship competition.

His presence reminded the current Beermen of the standards expected from a franchise that has consistently competed for titles.

San Miguel eventually found the response it needed, defeating Ginebra, 101-98, in Game 3 on November 3 at the City of Dasmariñas Arena in Cavite.

The victory kept the Beermen’s season alive and reduced their series deficit to 2-1.

Although Cabagnot was not responsible for the team’s performance on the court, his visit offered encouragement during a moment when San Miguel needed to reconnect with its identity.

The veteran guard remains closely associated with one of the franchise’s most memorable achievements.

During the 2016 Philippine Cup Finals, Cabagnot played for the Beermen when they overcame a 0-3 disadvantage against Alaska to capture the championship.

San Miguel became the first team in PBA history to win a best-of-seven finals series after losing the opening three games.

The extraordinary comeback became widely known as the “Beeracle,” a nickname that continues to represent the team’s ability to overcome seemingly impossible circumstances.

The current quarterfinal series presents a different challenge, but the story of that championship remains relevant as San Miguel attempts to recover from its difficult start.

The Beermen entered the matchup against Ginebra facing significant pressure after losing the first two games.

Their opening defeat came in a 104-95 decision, followed by a more convincing 126-99 loss that placed them on the brink of elimination.

The results exposed several problems, particularly the team’s defensive struggles and difficulty matching Ginebra’s offensive rhythm.

San Miguel needed a stronger collective effort to avoid being swept.

Game 3 provided that response.

George King led the Beermen with 21 points and 12 rebounds, delivering an important performance as the team fought to maintain its advantage.

Fajardo also played a significant role, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds while converting all seven of his field-goal attempts.

Marcio Lassiter contributed 13 points, including important outside shots that helped San Miguel withstand Ginebra’s attempts to recover.

The Beermen displayed greater patience on offense and improved their ability to execute during the closing stages.

Their defensive effort also became more effective, allowing them to protect the lead and secure a victory that prevented the series from ending prematurely.

Head coach Leo Austria acknowledged the importance of Lassiter’s contribution, explaining that the veteran shooter had initially been expected to rest.

However, his performance gave the coaching staff another reason to keep him involved.

Austria also emphasized the value of the team’s collective execution, particularly when San Miguel needed timely scoring and better decision-making.

The victory provided the Beermen with renewed confidence, but the challenge remains substantial.

Ginebra still holds the series advantage and needs only one more win to advance to the semifinals.

The Gin Kings have demonstrated their ability to produce consistent offense, making it necessary for San Miguel to maintain its defensive discipline.

The Beermen must also continue finding contributions from different players rather than depending entirely on their established stars.

Cabagnot’s visit served as a reminder of how championship teams are built through teamwork, experience and resilience.

His presence also reinforced the connection between San Miguel’s previous achievements and the current group attempting to preserve its season.

For Fajardo and his teammates, the encouragement came at an important moment.

They now have an opportunity to carry the momentum from Game 3 into their next encounter and make the series more competitive.

San Miguel’s situation remains challenging, but the victory has restored some belief within the team.

The Beermen have not yet completed a comeback, and their championship hopes remain dependent on what happens next.

However, Cabagnot’s appearance provided a timely reminder that difficult situations do not necessarily determine the final outcome.

For a franchise built on winning, the opportunity to fight another day is already meaningful.

San Miguel has taken its first step toward recovery.

Now, the Beermen must continue proving that the determination associated with their championship history remains alive.
