The Meralco Bolts held their ground against a determined Blackwater Bossing comeback, escaping with a 120-115 victory that strengthened their position in the race for a quarterfinal berth in the PBA Season 50 Governors’ Cup.
Playing at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, Meralco appeared headed for a comfortable win before Blackwater mounted a furious fourth-quarter rally. The Bossing even managed to take the lead late in the game, threatening to snatch a victory that had seemed firmly within the Bolts’ grasp.
Meralco responded with timely baskets and composed execution in the closing minutes, securing its second consecutive win and improving its record to 4-5 in Group B. The result moved the Bolts into fourth place, giving them a valuable advantage in the battle for the remaining playoff positions.
Blackwater, meanwhile, dropped to 3-5, making its remaining assignments increasingly important as the elimination round approached its decisive stretch.
Varnado leads Meralco’s charge
Jordon Varnado delivered a standout performance for the Bolts, finishing with 31 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks. More impressively, the import completed his production without committing a turnover, providing Meralco with a reliable presence throughout the contest.
Varnado’s all-around contribution proved especially important when Blackwater began threatening Meralco’s lead. His ability to score, create opportunities for teammates and contribute defensively helped the Bolts remain competitive when the game became a tense battle of execution.
Chris Newsome also played a major role in the victory, adding 24 points, six rebounds and three assists. His offensive contribution gave Meralco another dependable option during the closing stretch, when every possession carried significant weight.
Bong Quinto contributed 15 points, while Cliff Hodge provided 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Jason Brickman added 10 points and six assists, helping the Bolts maintain their offensive rhythm.
The collective effort was crucial in a game that nearly slipped away. Rather than depending entirely on Varnado, Meralco received important contributions from several players when the pressure intensified.
Blackwater refuses to surrender
The Bossing appeared to be in serious trouble after Meralco established a lead of as many as 20 points. The Bolts carried an 11-point advantage, 97-86, into the fourth quarter and seemed positioned to close out the contest without much difficulty.
Blackwater had other plans.
Led by Sedrick Barefield and Kentrell Barkley, the Bossing gradually erased the deficit and turned the final period into a dramatic contest. Barefield finished with 31 points, five rebounds and two steals, while Barkley produced 29 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.
Their offensive performances helped Blackwater regain confidence and put the Bolts under mounting pressure. The Bossing eventually moved ahead, 113-111, with approximately a minute and 44 seconds remaining.
The sudden shift in momentum placed Meralco in danger of surrendering a victory it had controlled for much of the second half.
However, the Bolts responded with a crucial scoring run, reclaiming the lead and creating enough separation to protect their advantage. Blackwater continued fighting until the final possessions, but Meralco managed to hold on.
The comeback demonstrated the Bossing’s resilience, although their inability to complete the turnaround left them with another costly defeat in the playoff race.
Playoff implications grow
The victory carried considerable importance for Meralco, which needed to build momentum after a difficult stretch in the conference. Moving into fourth place in Group B placed the Bolts in a stronger position, although their postseason qualification remained far from guaranteed.
The Governors’ Cup format allows the top four teams in each group to advance to the quarterfinals. With several clubs competing for the remaining places, Meralco must continue collecting victories to avoid losing ground.
The Bolts can take confidence from their ability to withstand Blackwater’s rally, but the game also exposed weaknesses that require attention. Allowing a large lead to disappear could become costly against opponents with similar offensive firepower.
For Blackwater, the defeat highlighted both the team’s potential and its need for greater consistency. Barefield and Barkley demonstrated their ability to carry the scoring load, but the Bossing must find ways to avoid falling into deep deficits and improve their execution during decisive moments.
Meralco looks to maintain momentum
The Bolts now have an opportunity to build on consecutive victories as they pursue a place in the postseason. Their challenge is to combine the offensive production of Varnado and Newsome with improved defensive consistency and better control of late-game situations.
Blackwater, meanwhile, must respond quickly. With the playoff race tightening, every remaining game presents an opportunity to recover lost ground.
Meralco escaped with a victory that could prove important when the standings are finalized. More than the final score, however, the contest showed how quickly fortunes can change in the PBA—and why teams must remain composed until the final buzzer.
