MANILA, Philippines – Head coach Jimmy Alapag expressed immense pride in the unwavering resilience and competitive heart displayed by his all-Filipino NLEX Road Warriors following a heartbreaking 112–110 defeat against the Converge FiberXers at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Taking the floor without an import following a season ending injury to reinforcement DeQuan Jones, who suffered a severe leg fracture in their prior outing, the Road Warriors faced a daunting tactical battle against a physical Converge side led by formidable foreign big man Cameron Clark. Despite operating at a massive height and numerical disadvantage in the frontcourt, NLEX refused to back down, pushing the FiberXers to the absolute limit in a wild, down to the wire thriller that came down to the final fractions of a second.

Following the dramatic encounter, Alapag praised his players for their extraordinary resolve, emphasizing that while the outcome on the scoreboard was disappointing, the heart and determination exhibited by his squad served as a powerful testament to their collective character. The former league MVP noted that taking a fully equipped, import led team down to the final possession with an all Filipino lineup demonstrated the immense depth and fighting spirit within the Road Warriors’ locker room.

The contest unfolded as an exhilarating battle of contrasting styles. Converge looked to capitalize on Clark’s imposing physical presence inside, feeding the veteran import early and often. Clark responded with a monster performance, pouring in 37 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to anchor the FiberXers’ attack. Alongside Clark, local standouts Juan Gomez de Liaño and Justin Arana stepped up in the second half, each contributing 19 points to keep Converge in control during critical stretches.

However, NLEX countered Converge’s size advantage with relentless full court pressure, rapid ball movement, and fearless perimeter shooting. Trailing by five entering the fourth quarter, the Road Warriors mounted a furious rally led by dynamic guard Ljay Gonzales, who turned in a career defining performance off the bench. Gonzales poured in a team high 23 points, showcasing fearless drives to the basket and opportunistic perimeter shot-making that kept NLEX within striking distance throughout the final period.

Superstar guard Robert Bolick once again functioned as the primary catalyst for NLEX, contributing 19 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Bolick nearly tied the game in the closing moments when he launched a long four pointer with under three minutes remaining, briefly giving NLEX a 99–97 lead and sending the venue into a frenzy. Dynamic backcourt partner Schonny Winston added 17 points, while big man JB Bahio provided essential frontcourt grit with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds, battling valiantly against Clark in the paint.

The game reached a wild crescendo in the final seconds. Trailing 112–106 with under two seconds remaining, Gonzales sank an incredible four pointer while being fouled by Calvin Abueva, cutting the deficit to 112–110 and giving NLEX a rare opportunity for a game tying five point play sequence. Although Gonzales intentionally missed the subsequent free throw in an effort to create a tip-in scenario, Clark managed to secure the defensive rebound as time expired, narrowly preserving the victory for Converge.

Reflecting on his team’s performance after the game, Alapag pointed out that the effort displayed against Converge reinforces the squad’s championship aspirations moving into the conference hiatus. He highlighted Gonzales’s breakout game as a clear sign of the young guard’s rapid development, calling him a rising force in the league who stepped up when his team needed him most.

Despite the narrow setback, NLEX heading into the mid-conference break sitting comfortably at the top of the Group A standings with a 7–2 win-loss record, tied with the San Miguel Beermen. The extended break provides NLEX management and coaching staff crucial time to facilitate the transition for incoming replacement import Deonte Burton, a former NBA player with whom Alapag shares history from his coaching tenure in the Sacramento Kings system.
